You may want to try and add-on such as https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/auto-reader-view/ or https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/automatic-reader-view/.

Ok, I guess I can understand the power of an add-on, but this is something I expect the browser to do fundamentally. I’m trying to switch from Safari, but this is yet another distraction.

Sorry, I was just thinking out loud. I have no desire for them to change anything for me. There is too much they would need to change to make Firefox work the way I am used to doing things. In my short time using it, I found nothing compelling to make me want to invest the time to learn new ways.
