In layman's terms, how do I keep a gmail message in Thunderbird and at the same time delete it from my Gmail account? I am trying to use Thunderbird as a first-time user to manage my storage in gmail.

If you set the account up as POP, the default setup is to download to PC and delete from server. That would solve your problem as stated and is automatic. REMEMBER: you have to set authority for IMAP and/or POP from the online Gmail account first.
