A couple of years ago an OS "upgrade" from Kitkat (4.4.4) to 5.x on my Google Nexus 7 tablet rendered it so slow as to be useless. I set it aside and didn't think about it until recently, when I thought it would be a good eReader. I found a YouTube video that told me how to reinstall 4.4.4., which I did successfully. But it amounted to a factory reset, which means that all the installed apps, including Firefox, were deleted.

I'd now like to reinstall Firefox, but can't find a version that works. The last version I had on the Nexus 7 was 68. I realize that this is outdated and probably no longer supported, but I'd like to install it anyway. Where can I get this version?

Thanks.

Hi

You can find the old version here, but I would strongly recommend that you consider a more up to date copy of Android.

https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/mobile/releases/68.9.0/

You will struggle to find secure, up to date apps for your device, on top of the security issue that have been patched in more recent versions of Android.

Thanks. I understand the security issues, and I'd love to get an updated version of Android, but the only one that Google supports for this device (5.x) renders it so slow as to be useless. Might as well be bricked. So I downgraded to 4.4.4, which works fine, but apps are no longer in the Play Store. I only intend to use this as an eReader with Firefox and the Amazon Kindle app.

So now I know where to find the files. Thanks again. Next question: once I download the APK file, how do I install? I've only ever clicked "Install" in the Play Store.

You will need to use the file manager app on your device and double tap the .apk file to install it (being sure to have disabled the block on sideloaded apps, which is not recommended).
