Is there a way to force Thunderbird to use SSL/ TLS?

I'm having trouble syncing my icloud "Sent messages" folder w/ Thunderbird. Albeit it works with kmail, evolution etc.

The recommended settings for the icloud smtp use STARTTLS security on port 587. There are a few providers that require SSL/TLS on 587, and to do that select SSL/TLS in the drop-down menu, and then type in 587 for the port.

What is the name of the folder in webmail that stores sent messages? It might be Sent, Sent Items or some other term. Check that the correct folder is set in the Copies & Folders section of Account Settings, and that the correct folder is subscribed (right-click the account in the Folder Pane, Subscribe..., Refresh).
