Have old version and really need to update, but automatic download of updates doesn't work, ('Update server not found (check your internet connection)'), alternative page link also not functional. I have download latest version but want to make sure account settings (multiple email addresses all POP3 in thunderbird) and 15 years of emails) are all preserved safely through upgrade. Any advice welcome!

I would start with a backup of the old profile folder. Better safe than sorry, right? Once you have the backup safely stashed away, go ahead and attempt the update. I would start with uninstalling the old version then install the new one, instead of installing pn top of the old one. This will make sure you have only one version installed at any time and spare you the confusion and mistakes that would otherwise ensue.
