You access your gmail email address via gmail webmail account regarding gmail passwords.

ISP's also require you to use the Forgotten Link to gain access to ISP webmail to reset passwords.

If this is not resetting a gmail email address password nor ISP password, but another maybe an email address hosted by a website then you may have instructed them to send notification to your unrelated gmail account.

re: but google keep chucking me off What do you mean? In Thunderbird when you select gmail account and click on 'Get Messages' button, what happens ? Do you get an error message if yes then what is error message word for word?

Is the gmail account a pop mail account and gmail just keeps asking for password ? Gmail may be deliberately blocking your access. Logon to gmail webmail account and select the option to use 'less secure apps'.
