Unified folders option does not stay selected
Selecting view->Folders->Unified does not keep unified selected. It doesn't change anything and when looking at the option again, the "All" is still selected.

I see you have many addons installed, including Unity.
Does the problem reproduce in safe mode? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode-thunderbird
On restarting with addons disabled option. This dialog box comes up before starting. I select "Continue with Safe Mode". (I assume that this is right). With thunderbird in this state, problem persists. Hope I correctly did safe mode :) Thanks very much for your help
I suggest you delete virtualfolders.dat from the profile folder (Help/Troubleshooting Information, click Open Folder, close TB) and the 'smart mailboxes' folder from the Mail subfolder.
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unified_Folders_not_working
I notice that your outgoing server is outlook.office365.com. Is that working? The current recommendation is smtp.office365.com.
There does not appear to be a smart mailboxes folder in the Mail subfolder, I have the following folders in /profile_folder/Mail : Local Folders, localhost, localhost-1 (screenshot attached)
I'm not a Linux user, but you might have to enable the viewing of hidden files and folders. Even so, there may not be a smart mailboxes folder in your setup, in which case deleting virtualfolders.dat might be sufficient.
I did try that but it did not appear to be there
how did you get to your profile folder? There is a button in the troubleshooting information on the help menu to show the profile folder. Use it to make sure what Thunderbird thinks is your profile and you think is your profile is the same place.
That is what i did. There seem to be a number of different folders for imap, mail, etc. I did copy my .thunderbird from another computer as i had hoped to keep the configuration. Unified folders was enable on the other computer. The original computer was also a linux machine
