When leaving the start page blank in thunderbird, it goes to a standard start page. This start page talks about new buttons. However these aren't applicable for the OSX version of thunderbird. Can the web server detect OS-type and display a different screen?

Could you provide the screenshot of that.

Check in safemode, it may be addon issue.

Are you using any themes in thunderbird?

From your screenshot I don't see any buttons which 'aren't applicable for the OSX version of thunderbird'. So what are you talking about?
