unable to download updates. keeps telling me required software not installed.

I keep getting notices for sometime now to install new 2 critical updates updates. When I click on update. It goes through the motion of installing updates. That is the bar starts filling in. But then at the end of process it tells me that it cannot install the updates because the required software is not installed.
