Mozilla Layout Changed on its Own
Hello. Hoping this doesn't have a simple answer that I can't find on my own, but I have looked and haven't found anything yet.
I've been using Thunderbird for a while to manage all my email accounts. But the layout started doing something weird this morning that makes it almost unusable for me. I noticed this about 11:45 in the morning and it had been working normally until that moment all morning.
When I open Thunderbird with layout set to Classic View, the "Welcome to Thunderbird" page is visible normally in the bottom of the screen. When I click on an email to open it, the email usually appears on top of this welcome page so I still have almost half the vertical screen space for reading my emails. I typically use the F8 key to turn this pane on and off.
Today, it seems that the emails started only taking up about a quarter of that space. Between the list of emails and the pane where I read the emails, the "Welcome to Thunderbird" page remains partly visible, taking up screen space. I only have a little bit of the email visible. It remains this way no matter which layout I change to. Did I press a button that changed this accidentally? I can't see why anyone would want this sort of layout.
I have screen shots to help you see what is happening. The first one shows what Thunderbird looks like when I first open it. That appears normal. The 2nd image shows what happens when I try to open an email. As you can see, the Welcome page is now occupying a big part of the screen and there's barely any space to read emails. I can't adjust it with the mouse. How can I remove this?

I would like to add that sometimes, when I click on the topmost email (which should be the newest email) I get this message instead of the email I wanted to open and read: "We're sorry, but we can't display this conversation, because the messages have been moved or deleted."
Once another new email arrives, I can now open the email normally again.
Sometimes, opening and closing Thunderbird lets me open the email also. I haven't worked out a pattern yet but will keep trying.

Thunderbird version 128.9.1esr (64-bit) I am running Windows 11.
Your images do not look like the standard Thunderbird.
It looks like you are either using an addon extension to modify your version of Thunderbird maybe a theme or you are using a 'userChrome.css' file. Suggest you start by selecting the default 'Dark' theme (it may be necessary to uninstall non default themes to fully remove all code from everywhere) and then run for a while.
One quick method you can test is to test using Troubleshoot Mode. Help > Troubleshoot Mode Click on 'Restart' Select 'Continue in Troubleshoot mode'
Please note if Thunderbird works in TRoubleshoot mode or after removing theme etc then it's not a Thunderbird problem.
In which case, if this is caused by a theme you installed then you need to tell the author of the theme and use an alternative.
re :"We're sorry, but we can't display this conversation, because the messages have been moved or deleted."
That message does not sound like Thunderbird. If there is no content then it's normally just blank, so perhaps there maybe another addon 'ublock origin' which could also be interfering with the display.
But first option would be to see if this visual issue is because of the theme you are using.
The second picture in the first post indicates you're using the Conversations add-on. If you're on TB 135 or 136, update to the latest add-on v. 4.2.5:
"Version 4.2.5 Released April 4, 2025 579.3 KiB Works with Thunderbird 128.0a1 - 139.0a1
- Fixes compatibility with Thunderbird 137. If using Thunderbird 135 or Thunderbird 136, please upgrade."
