I created a group list that I have to change from time to time. When I try to delete a name it seems to be deleted, but the next time I bring up the list the name is back. Likewise, when I add a name it is gone the next time. I am using Thunderbird 45.1.0 on an IMac with El Capitan.

When an address book won't accept or retain changes, it usually implies that the underlying data file is corrupt and has become non-writeable. Your Mailing List is stored inside an address book so can suffer the same issues.

I would export the affected address book to an LDIF file, remove the address book and then re-create it by importing the LDIF file.

Select the affected address book, use Tools|Export and export it to an LDIF file. If it's either Personal Address Book (PAB) or Collected Addresses (CA), give it a distinctive name that's different from its name in the Address Book.

If the address book in question is PAB or CA you won't be allowed to delete it within Thunderbird. You'll need to delete its data file.

Easy way to find it:

  1. In Thunderbird , go to Help|Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click on the button next to Profile Directory and it will open your profile.
  3. Close Thunderbird.
  4. In the profile, find and delete the data file: abook.mab for PAB, or history.mab for CA.

Now you can:

  1. Restart Thunderbird.
  2. Import your LDIF file.
  3. If appropriate, select all (ctrl+a on a PC) and move its contents back to the required address book.
