Installed TB 31.5. Everything looked fine til I attempted to open an email. When I attempt to do so, no content/body of email displays. Have tried many different emails with same result: shows To, From, Subject, etc on top left. Where message body should be, it is all blank. Have tried changing 'view message body as' options (original html, simple html, plain text). Nothing works.

Here's the info, except for the printer details. As far as I know, I don't use any add-ons specifically for thunderbird. Do you want to know the ones for firefox? Would they affect things in thunderbird?

I would like you to try to start Windows in safe mode, (with networking enabled).

Win7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

Then start Thunderbird in safe mode. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode

Does it behave better?

more options

Sorry, Matt I missed your reply above. Yes, I did install the latest version (that's what started this whole mess). I see that now there's another update since that one, however. I think I was previously using a 2.x version (maybe 28?). Yes, I'm using the default theme. I tried making the changes permanent; it doesn't make the message body visible. I have to select 'continue in safe mode' when I'm restarting to be able to see message body. Selecting 'disable all add ons' and 'reset toolbars and controls' and then 'make changes and restart' doesn't work.

Is it possible that changing the password on one of my email addresses would have triggered something like this? That doesn't make sense to me, but it was the beginning of everything--the reason that I updated to the newest version.

I must admit I am at a bit of a loss, and have put my hand up for help.

In the meantime, this may not help, but it will not hurt.

On the Help menu (alt+H) > troubleshooting information select the show profile button.

close Thunderbird. Delete the files panacea.dat and Foldertree.json Restart Thunderbird.

Try different folder views from the View menu (alt+V). I dount it is a particular view, but you never know.

more options

Well, it didn't help, but it did produce a change of sorts. When I select 'wide view', instead of the blank portion being gray, it's dark blue (like the background where the upper tool bar is--the one where I see 'file' 'edit', etc.

Reply to gnospen: I restarted windows in safe mode, then started thunderbird in safe mode and it did behave better. TB behaves normally in safe mode anyway, so not sure what this tells you?

Could this have something to do with a security setting somewhere?

This doesn't make any sense to me either. Sorry if anything below repeat what you've already tried, but this thread is a bit long for me.

  1. 1 is your Thunderbird profile backed up? If not, please do so.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb#w_backing-up-a-profile

Some suggestions (: - what appears in Tools | Error Console when you click a different message? - problem go away by installing program from scratch after download from http://getthunderbird.com/ ? - problem go away by clearing cache? Tools | options | advanced | network and disk | click the button - problem go away by installing newer version? http://download.cdn.mozilla.net/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/38.0b5/win32/en-US/ - still fails? Please post a screen shot

It's confusing. Maybe start wityh a fresh profile will help. You don't overwrite your old profile when you create a new profile but save your old one anyway.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Thunderbird

That might help.

Wayne,

Profile was backed up on Thursday and program was installed on a different computer with same result. 1 caveat: I did install 31.5 (not 31.6, which is now available I see) because I wanted same version as I had backed up profile with mozbackup. Problem doesn't go away with clearing cache.

What appears in the error console:

Could not read chrome manifest 'file:///C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/Mozilla%20Thunderbird/chrome.manifest'. Could not read chrome manifest 'file:///C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/Mozilla%20Thunderbird/extensions/%7B972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd%7D/chrome.manifest'. I haven't the slightest idea what any of that means, but thank you!

Will try installing 31.6 and post the outcome. A bit uncomfortable posting screen shot on open forum. A hack of one of my business email addresses is what began this whole problem in the first place).

Gnospen: I was thinking that might be of some use. I've hestitated to do so, as it seems confusing and I'm not very computer savvy--most of the time, I don't understand the terminology.

If I create a new profile for Thunderbird, will my Firefox profile stay the same?

I will post what happens when I've carved out a slot of time to do all of this (moving is the pits).

Thanks!

What Wayne forget to add was press the clear button on the error console. click on something that does not display correctly. What is in the error console then.

Unfortunately the error console is usually full of junk. so a very short window to get error messages limits it to things that might be relevant.

One other easy thing to try is to reinstall. It does not affect your mail and might refresh some file that has been damaged.

To answer your other question Firefox and Thunderbird have separate profile folders.

About FireFox and Thunderbird, They are different programs each has its own program and profiles directories (folders) Program in: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox" "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird" Profiles in: C:\Users\"Win-user-account"\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox C:\Users\"Win-user-account"\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\profiles

When you update only the program-folder will be changed, your profile stays intact. 0 When you create a new profile there will be a new folder in ....Thunderbird\profile (but your old is still there).

You said you tried installing your backup profile on a different pc and it failed That somehow indicates your profile might be screwed some way.

(#Matt, could it be virus protection? )

Try uninstall TB and delete any trace of your old profile on that other pc download latest TB and install. Setup your accounts one by one. It's POP so let messages stay on server until you delete them. As this isn't your ordinary computer, you want to download them again. If this works you could take a backup of this profile and restore it on your ordinary pc

I don't know why you have a userChrome - file But you can temporary eliminate all userChrome changes by renaming the chrome FOLDER within your profile- folder (C:/Users/Bonnie/AppData/Roaming/Thunderbird/Profiles/048n1ff9.default)

Matt, clicked on clear button and then viewed error console on a message that doesn't display (which would be any message). Error console is empty.

Gnospen, how do I delete any trace of old profile on the new computer? I did previously try uninstalling and then reinstalling tb but, as your post would indicate, the profile was still there, so nothing changed.

Will have to find passwords for all email accounts in order to set them up one by one.

I don't know either (it's all greek to me), but what does that mean 'temporary' eliminate the changes? Would I write the old name down to later change it back?

Thanks

Update--cannot find profile on the other computer. It is main computer on my biz network, maybe that is why. When I look under 'Users' on that one, I see only my name (which is computer name), 'Public' and 'Share'. Under C/program files (86)/Mozilla Thunderbird, there is an extensions file that looks like it could be a profile, but I'm not sure. It's not labeled as such.

I did locate profile on 'ordinary' computer, which is my laptop.

So far, no luck finding the profile manager on either.

If I uninstall TB 31.5 and install 31.6, that would just keep all the same profile, correct? So is unlikely to change anything...

more options

To find your profile-folder: Under C:\users\" windows account" you have a hidden folder, AppData . To view hidden files/folders you have to open explorer/tools/folder-alternative and under show (?) mark Show hidden files, folders and units . (My win7 is in Swedish so I hope my translation is correct.)

To start Profile manager: Window-key + R (opens run), Enter: Thunderbird -P

To find passwords saved on Thunderbird (if you have a master password you have to use it to get access.) Tools/options/security/passwords, saved password button, show passwords.

Izmjenjeno od Gnospen

more options

Bypass the hidden part.

In the start menu / search type%appdata% and press enter.

Explorer will open in the application data folder (or appdata) in the correct location for your to see the folder Thunderbird. profile are stored in that folder, more specifically in sub folders.

When uninstalling and wanting to delete everything all data as well as the program delete the Thunderbird folder at that location. (not all mail will be lost.

more options

Progress! Found profile (I had forgotten about hidden folders--had enabled on laptop but not main computer). Found passwords Started Profile Manager (just to make sure I could) Have uninstalled TB on 'other computer'

Will proceed further when I am awake and have chunk of time.

Couple more questions: I have set TB to leave messages on server til I delete. If I download them, they will still stay on server, correct? (the ones that arrive after I changed that setting). Plan to backup profile again before I begin this process. When I backup profile (using mozbackup), there are a lot of components to choose. I mainly want to save my emails, address book and passwords. Should I also backup 'general settings'?

Thanks!

back up everything and restore everything that is the method with the least angst in the long run.

POP messages stay on the server if you specify that.

Did you get rid of the usechrome file by renaming the folder? I do recommend it as the setting in that file could well be the cause of the problem.

more options

No, I will find it and rename it before next backup. Should the name be in a particular format?
