Does the same page appear if you open a new window (Ctrl+n)?

if yes:

  • Can you check for an unwanted extension that could be overriding your preference? To open the Add-ons page, you can use either:
    • Ctrl+Shift+a
    • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions, and you can review the list on the right and disable everything you don't really need right away.

  • If you change works during the session but reverts between sessions, please see this article: How to fix preferences that won't save. Also try turning off the "Surfing Protection" feature of Advanced SystemCare, or similar utility software you might have.

If it only happens when you use your desktop shortcut:

Sometimes external software will insert a URL into the shortcut. You can remove this -- at least on the desktop side of Windows. Right-click the icon > Properties > Shortcut tab. The Target should be the following, no more, no less:

  • 32-bit Windows: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
  • 64-bit Windows: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"

If you find extra stuff on the end, remove it.

If you still have unwanted software on your computer, it could change your settings back again. I suggest checking the following:

(1) Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. Click the "Installed on" column heading to group the items by date. This helps in finding undisclosed bundle items that may have snuck in with some free software.

(2) Supplement your regular security software with some of the scanning/cleaning tools listed in our support article: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware.

Can you root it out?
