Trying to change options of an account produces spinning beach ball in 78.4.0. Caused by Junk folder.

After the auto-update to Thunderbird 78.4.0, when I try to change the setting of the "Connection security:", or “Authentication method:”, or "Advanced Account Settings” options for one of my accounts, I see a “spinning beach ball of death”.
I pick the “Tools -> Account Settings”. I scroll down to one of the account “folders”. I pick the “Server Settings” item for that account. The "Connection security:" option is currently set to “SSL/TLS”. I click on that menu to try to change the setting for the option. When I pick any option in the pop-up menu, including the current option of “SSL/TLS”, there is a pause, and then I see the Mac’s “spinning beach ball of death”. I have to then do the Mac’s Force Quit to shut down Thunderbird.
Please note that the “spinning beach ball” I see is the rainbow one from the MacOS, not Thunderbird’s blue “spinning beach ball” that is presented at times like when it is rebuilding an index for an email folder.
After some additional testing, I found that trying to change any of the options for that one account will cause the lock-up, but changing the options for other accounts will work without any problems.
Does anyone else see the same results in Thunderbird 78.4.0?
I am running on MacOS 10.14.6 (Mojave). I removed all extensions, and themes, and the problem still happens. The problem happens both in Offline and Online mode. As described elsewhere here, I tried downgrading the security.tls.version.min to 1, but that didn’t make a difference, so I set it back to 3.
This started happening yesterday after Thunderbird auto-updated to 78.4.0 from 68.
I also see the “spinning beach ball of death” in both Offline and Online modes if I just open Thunderbird and leave it alone for 5 minutes (I timed it), but trying to change the account options for that one account is a program lock-up that I reproduce right away, and due to a specific action on my part.
Does anyone else see this, and does anyone have any explanation for why trying to change account options for one of my accounts, but not for any of the others, will cause Thunderbird to lock-up?

I think I may have solved the problem.
It looks like the upgrade somehow corrupted the Spam "Junk " folder on the single account I mentioned above. Despite all my efforts to reindex or recreate the "Junk" folder, I was never able to fix the problem.
However, I was able to copy all the folders from that account, (not including the "Junk" folder,) to a mirrored subfolder on one of my other accounts.
I then deleted the "bad" account, recreated it, and copied all the mirrored folders over to that new account.
When I saw that Thunderbird no longer locked-up after sitting idle for 5 minutes, I started to turn back on all the various options and capabilities I had turned off in my efforts to track the problem down.
I've been using Thunderbird for a few days since then, and so far everything seems to be working without any of the prior problems.
That other account was working fine before the upgrade, and although I seem to have fixed this, I'd still like to know why something like a corrupted "Junk" folder would cause Thunderbird to lock up.
