I've always used Firefox on my Windows 7 desktop, going back many versions now. This evening I was browsing in Firefox 16 when I got an alert that version was 17 was available so I went ahead and upgraded. The download and install looked entirely normal but...now I cannot visit websites on that computer. Any browser I try (both Firefox and IE) behaves as if the computer's Internet connection had gone out.

But it hasn't. Thunderbird is still working just fine, so is Dropbox, so is my favorite multiplayer strategy game. I tried both cold and warm reboots, no change. It's as if installing Firefox 17 somehow disabled all browsing just on that particular computer.

I'm typing this on my wife's laptop, in Firefox 17, over the exact same wireless connection that the above computer is on. I haven't touched any settings on the router nor on my computer's Internet Connection or the home network or anything. Just suddenly, the moment I installed Firefox 17, I cannot browse on that computer.

What on earth might the problem be? Is there a way to revert to Firefox 16 and see if that fixes it?

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

Yes that was the problem, thanks. My Norton Internet Security had become wonky lately (to the degree that I'm going to give up on it, a shame because I'd been a loyal Norton user for many years with zero issues). I couldn't even uninstall Norton in the usual way but got some advice to download Norton's Removal Tool. That tool worked fine, it successfully stripped all traces of Norton from my computer and now browsing is working fine.
