Hi. My iMac failed and I now have another. I've downloaded TB to it. In my dropbox account I have a profile backup folder which I'm hoping is what I need. Is there a set of foolproof instructions for restoring from the profile backup?

I sometimes get burned when attempting to help a Mac user, but I think these steps will work - and since they don't corrupt anything, they should cause no problems:

  1. in thunderbird, click help>troubleshootinginformation
  2. scroll down to 'profile foldler' in left column and click 'open folder'
  3. exit thunderbird, you are now in profile. Notice the folder in which the profile is located.
  4. copy your backup profile into the same folder as the current profile. remember its name
  5. restart thunderbird
  6. click help>troubleshootinginformation
  7. scroll down this time to 'profiles' and click 'about:profiles'
  8. click the 'create profile button
  9. click next
  10. enter a short name for the profile, such as OLDPROFILE
  11. click the choose button to locate and select your profile
  12. click finish and launch
