How do I change my default save or open of downloads

At the moment my downloads just get opened as a read-only file, I want to have them saved and opened automatically, is that do-able?

Flies that you open with another application are saved as read-only for your protection. If you want to modify them then you need to use "Save as" in that application and save them under a different name. If you would save them under the same name then your edits can get lost if that temp file is removed after closing the editor.
