How do I get the old look of folders back?

I absolutely can't stand the new "outline" style folders in Thunderbird. It's driving me up a freaking wall. I know I can go through and individually change each and every color (as much of a pain as that would be), but that just changes the color of the outline. How do I change the look of the folders themselves? Is there any way that I can rid of this awful new look?

See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1311513#answer-1363777 and consider Phoenity Icons as the simplest method.

It's possible to hide the icons entirely.
