Basically I can't seem to find a way to install Mozilla Thunderbird on my new laptop (I currently have it on my mac book pro). What I'm after is being able to use the same email program and account on both devices interchangeably. Is this possible?

What do you mean same program on both devices? Thunderbird does not run on iOS. It should work on Mac OS though, you can grab the latest version from here: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/

Oh-- whoops-- my bad-- I meant to say I have Mozilla on my laptop, but want to get it installed on my IPAD

Okay, that makes a whole lot more sense :) In this case, the answer is you can't. This boils down to two factors:

  • Thunderbird development is stretched thin to say the least
  • Apple has very strict policies regarding JavaScript and browser engines, so basically the whole thing should be rewritten for iOS – this will likely never happen.

Oh. Shitty :(. That explains why I couldn't find any software or app to use/download. Thanks for taking the time to explain.

But you don't need the same email client on each device or platform to be able to do what you want. Just add the account to the native email client on the iPad.

hmmm- ok. You have to forgive me-- I'm an idiot about how this all works technically-- my web guy set me up with Mozilla Thunderbird a million yrs ago and I love it and hope to keep being able to use it-- but I don't pretend to fully understand it at all lol.

Basically here's my sitch: I have a gmail account but use Mozilla as an email sorter and for storage/records. I use the tags as my system of folders, etc, and I run a business so I keep emails around as records for accounting, contracts, threads with clients, etc . I can of course log into gmail directly on any device, my iphone included of course, but now that I got an ipad I'd like to be able to sort and tag on the ipad using Mozilla the way I do on my laptop, so that it syncs b/w those 2 devicies and I don't have to travel around with my laptop-- which is old and heavy-- and can just take my ipad around

So, that's what I'm after-- is that at all doable?

Your ipad should have come with an email client installed. If not go to the Apple app store and install one. Add the details for your email account and check your mail.
