As above really. I closed down my computer yesterday when leaving work, when I restarted the vast majority of my stored logins and passwords had disappeared. I tried reset Firefox to no avail.

Did a system restore and nothing happened except ALL my firefox browsing history got deleted!! (I have never deleted it before - and history in other browsers remains in tact).

Now I have un and reinstalled Firefox (which definitely not choosing to have Firefox forget my saved data) and am still without any of my login or history.

Sigh :(

Thank you

Hi A-bel,

Sorry you are having problems.

Firefox should not delete history (unless set to do so); or passwords. For most users most of the time there are no problems.
(In exceptional cases older History is deleted as the database runs short of space for 1000s of bookmarks.) The commonest problem is that Firefox is simply not set to use save or display the information.

System Restores are something best used as a last resort for System problems affecting the Operating System or the whole computer and not for Firefox problems.
With any luck carefully the using Windows OS feature (files) restore previous versions we may get most or all of this back. I say carefully because it is all too easy to overwrite with the wrong file versions.
That may even be the initial cause of this problem.

With disappearing History there are several possibilities including.

  • Inadvertently deleted it yourself.
Firefox Reset does not delete History or passwords.
  • Some third party software able to clean up overzealously.
What privacy and cleaning related software do you have installed ?
What about utilities to help uninstall ?
  • A fault with Firefox.
This includes corruption of the database holding the History.
  • Uninstalling Firefox and choosing options to delete information or using some uninstaller will of course destroy passwords and History

First of all how do you know you have no History or passwords ?

Hi John,

Many thanks for you reply but I fear that the issue isn't solved.

I'm sure the problem isn't related to a third party clean up, nor am I using private browsing. I know I have no history or bookmarks because nothing is listed beyond yesterday (which is when it all got wiped).

There are cookes displaying when I got to 'remove individual cookies' (of which I have removed none) yet when I go to the websites listed, none of my log ins or passwords are there.

Firefox is not storing any log ins since yesterday even though I have changed nothing in the settings.

Thanks for any more help :)

If the History has been deleted then Firefox does not back that up.

Restoring Bookmarks is unlikely to help with History problems.
Restoring bookmarks is not really something to do unless you have already backed up bookmarks manually because any restore overwrites existing ones. You effectively destroy some bookmarks every time you restore to previous dates.

To try to restore History use the Windows OS option to change files to previous versions, but be careful always backup any such file before you try that, make an additional copy and place it somewhere safe outside of Firefox program or profile paths. (The Windows Desktop is ok.)

I will post more info later, no time right now.

Use the master password and password manager to prevent this . Here is the link :- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/where-are-my-logins-stored#w_use-the-password-manager-and-the-master-password

Continuing from my posts upthread.

The database with History and Bookmarks is in the Firefox profiles in a file called places.sqlite The profile itself is easiest found from an option on the Troubleshooting Information page.

As I said upthread back up the file by copying it before you make any attempt to restore an earlier version. The previous versions option is available on right clicking on files (With Firefox closed).
