Thunderbird email inbox won't sort by date
Hi Folks,
I would like to see my TB inbox to sort by date. I tried to do that by - Clicking on Message List Display Options at upper right - Selecting Sort by - Date But the messages are not in date order regardless of whether I select Ascending or Descending.
For example recent emails displayed in this order: 1/2/2026 1/1/2026 1/3/2026 (Date not displayed because it's today) 12/24/2026 1/3/2026 (Date not displayed because it's today) I'm using - PC with Windows 11 - Thunderbird release 146.01 (64 bit) which at least now is the latest release.
I welcome and appreciate any suggestions. Thanks, Marc

Check to see if you are also sorting by thread. That affects the sequence.

Hi David,
Wow! I found the filter was set to Sort by > Threaded, changed it to Sort by > Unthreaded, and now the messages are in order by date!
Big congratulations on solving my problem, and thanks!
Best, Marc
You are very welcome. Threaded has been the default since 2022, welcomed by some, cursed by others. You can change the default for any NEW folders at settings>appearance, but changing existing folders is a manual process.
The first thing I’d check is whether threading is enabled. If messages are grouped in threads, they won’t appear in strict date order even if you choose “Sort by Date.” Try going to View and switching to Unthreaded, then sort by Date again and see if that fixes it. It’s also worth checking whether you’re sorting by Date or Received. Switching between the two can sometimes correct odd ordering. If it’s still acting strange, right-click on your Inbox, choose Properties, and click Repair Folder. That rebuilds the folder index, and sorting issues are often caused by a corrupted index file.
