Folder display changes for junk and "sent messages" folders

I believe that version 145.0, newly installed on the 9th December, 2025 was showing server folders correctly; the server folder name matched the client folder name.

After upgrading to 146.0 on the 10th December, the server folder names for some folders are displaying with different client folder names.

The IMAP account has both "spam" and "junk" folders, Thunderbird is now displaying both as "Spam", you can only determine which folder is which by showing folder properties. It appears to users that there are two "Spam" folders now and not the two distinct folders with their own names.

Similar behaviour is happening for "Sent" and "Sent Messages" folders, both now display as "Sent".

These changes are confusing, the client sees two "Spam" folders and two "Sent" folders instead of the original proper server folder names.

Why has the display name for these folders changed?

How can I get TB to display the real underlying folder names?

@affinity, a reply from developers ...

"All folders with special folder flags get localised names. if there's two folders with the flag, they both get the same name. This change was intentional although this particular side-effect isn't really great"

@Wayne for developers...

Why the hell screw with folder names? At the very least, iconify the "type" of folder, but KEEP the name that the IMAP server is using. The names have obvious distinctions.

Spam and Junk are NOT the same.

"Sent" and "Sent Items" are typically non iDevice names with Apple having to be different and labeling /their/ sent folder as "Sent Messages" .... All are "Sent" folders, but each has their own name with valid reason or not! Email clients should NOT dictate how a folder is displayed in terms of it's name, clearly this is a poor decision to do so. It may be similar to the dumbing down which is done for the Apple world, but it shouldn't be acceptable practice.

How can we adjust this behaviour in config settings, if we cannot, please change that instead of dictating such a poor experience; not even Lookout (otherwise known as Outlook) does anything like this.

It was fucked up again, what the hell!?!?!?!?

The DEFAULT should be the original, it should NOT be necessary to change a config setting to AVOID the current terrible default setting!

Version 147.0 "new fuckup"

Add `mail.useLocalizedFolderNames' to toggle special folder name localization

Please remember you are sending these comments to me and I do not appreciate being sweared at.

I agree, the default should be displaying correct folder names. At least there is now an option to fix what we perceive as incorrect display. So I'm much relieved about that as it was causing so many various problems for users.

I've mentioned in the bug report that it would be useful for users to be able to easily switch it on/off in Settings > Appearance. Maybe that will happen - one can always hope :) Maybe you could post a comment in the bug report that seconds my suggestion.

Sorry to you.

And yes, my anger is clearly meant to be directed to what I believe to be a brain dead decision by the developer; there was backlash for good reason with what he pulled with 146.0 ...

He broke it with 146.0, changing what has been good forever before hand; 146.0.1 corrected that. The developer, with 147.0 ... seems to have learnt no lessons.

The regression was NOT appreciated.

But I do appreciate the option now available in config, but the default is clearly wrong; and of course I agree it should be an easy change for anybody without needing to go in to the config editor. No ordinary person should need to go in to the config editor and most ordinary people never will; just like Winblows registry. Again, I've got no problem with the option being there for us, but am absolutely pissed at the arrogance of the developer in choosing the abhorrent default setting.
