New message window not opening when write button pressed

When I click on the "Write" button to start a new email message, or "Reply" to an existing message a new window or tab does not open. Hovering over the T-Brid icon on the tray shows two windows existing (main screen and the new message), i can only access the main home screen. When I restart in safe mode, it works as expected. Win 7 Pro, Bitdefender. Bitdefender Toolbar in T-Bird is disabled.

Chosen solution

Start in safe mode (hold Shift when you launch TB), check 'Reset toolbars and controls', then click 'Make changes and restart'. Any difference?

Among other things safe mode disables all add-ons. Disable your add-ons one-by-one to determine which one is causing the problem.
