How can I debug application hangs?

Application : Thunderbird Version : 45.3.0

Today i experienced a period during which Thunderbird was not usabe because it was busy. This happened about every 5 seconds and lasted a few seconds each time. Making using the application a difficult task.

After accessing the settings for the SMTP-server the hangups have since now stopped to occur.

I'm curious if there is some kind of extensive log that shows what Thunderbird is doing during these hangs. After some research I have found a method to start a protocol-log via a batch-file and an option 'Error console (Ctrl+Shift+J)'. I have looked at the error console but couldn't find messages that seemed to be related to the hangups.

I have two questions:

  • Is there an extensive log available?
  • What could be causing a short hang every five seconds ( 'application doesn't react' )?
