Thunderbird extremely slow downloading and deleting
Anytime I go to download it loads one message at a time and it takes 5 to 10 seconds. Firefox works fine. I ran Malwarebytes, Superantispyware and Bitdefender. No spyware or viruses. It also takes forever to delete the messages. This just started 2 days ago. I re-downloaded Thunderbird and re-installed it. Application Basics

Then how do I know if there is a virus in my email? Also, Since it just started a week ago and the anti-virus is the same and not affecting the firefox, I am a little at a loss.

It sounds like your anti-virus software might be scanning everything and causing the slowdown. Suggest you stop scanning incoming and outgoing mail. If it is also scanning Thunderbird on startup, I would set up an exception for Thunderbird.

Virus/malware are incorporated in remote content (Thunderbird auto disables remote content) or attachments or links.
Any attachment you open in a suitable program will still get scanned. Do not open or click on anything you are not certain about. Never open any .exe file or .exe.jpg
Be wary of 'spoof' emails that pretend to come from a known person eg: friends email address, but in reality the content doesn't look quite normal for that person. Nefarious people think it's amusing to abuse other peoples email addresses.
always check that a link in the email is really a link to where it says. To check: hover (not click) mouse cursor over links in email and the real link is displayed in the bottom Status Bar.
