Plattform-details: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, x86, Thunderbird 31.7.0

I tried to upgrade Thunderbird to its latest stable version (38) by downloading it and replacing the contents from the folder /opt/thunderbird with the downloaded and extracted data from the newer version. Since it did not work as expected I undid everything by deleting the new folder and restoring the old one (of which I still had a backup).

I would now expect thunderbird to run as always and it fact the program starts up well. But now, the old profile is not working anymore well. Thunderbird runs the "System Integration Wizzard" and the "Welcome to Thunderbird Wizzard" each time at startup. Furthermore my E-Mail-Accounts, Calenders and Contacts (Internal and external) are not loaded. The collected addresses however work. The add-ons work as well.

The profile (around 2 gb) still exists in the profile folder ~/.thunderbird and the profile.ini corretly sets a relative path to this folder. Inside the folder everything seems to be in order. There does exist for example the ImapMail folder with all my E-mail-accounts.

Running thunderbird in safemode does not change anything. Also running thunderbird from the bash with the -profile option and the path to the profile does not change this...

What might be the problem? How can I fix this?

I went through this article several times. the only thing I could manage from there is recovering my Address-book. In the folder I encountered a "abook-1.mab" file that contained all addresses. The "abook.mab" file contained nothing. So I guess, that the new installation overwrote/replaced some of the old files with new empty files.

Probably it also replaced the prefs.js file where most other information is stored. I will try to see if I can restore it from a backup.

At which step do you get stuck?

I solved my problem by restoring the whole Profile from a Backup. I think the crucial part was the prefs.js file. Now everything works fine again. Thank you very much for the help!
