My email server addresses are both .tools.sky.com but Thuderbird keeps changing this to .sky.com at the setup stage.
This happens on both Linux Mate and Windows 8.1 on different PCs. Sky email works fine on IPAD Mail and on the mail app with Windows 8.1.
Chosen solution
You do enter the full server name with the selected server type (IMAP/POP)? pop.tools.sky.com or imap.tools.sky.com and the outgoing smtp.tools.sky.com

Thunderbird will try to look up configuration settings, but it does not have every one in it's database. Once it has looked them up, click on 'Manual config button. check you have the correct type selected Pop or IMAP then type in the correct settings. click on Done to create the mail account. see more info here:
Then before you download any messages, check all the server settings. Tools > Account Settings or Menu icon > Options > Account Settings
eg: If Pop you may want to 'Leave message on server'
In spite of entering the correct server names (.tools.sky.com) and port settings, when I check the server names using Tools>Account Settings, both the IMAP and SMTP server names have been changed to .sky.com.
It looks as if it only has .sky.com in its database for email addresses like mine (tkpaterson@sky.com). But that doesn't explain why the database is overriding the manual configuration settings.
Is there any way to work round this?
Once you have set up the accounts, you are free to open their settings and change it.
Right-click an account, select Settings.
The most obvious part relates to incoming (POP or IMAP) settings. Having sorted this out, you'll also need to go down to the last account listed on the account settings page, "Outgoing Server (SMTP)", select the sky account there and adjust it too.
When I select Settings > Server Settings, the Server Name shown is .sky.com. When I change this to the proper name (.tools.sky.com), I get the error message 'Please enter a valid server name'. The same thing happens with the SMTP server name.
No matter what I do, Thunderbird will not accept the proper server names. Is there some method of forcing the system to accept a valid server name?

I'm embarrassed to say that I have not been entering the server types IMAP and SMTP in the server names. I stupidly assumed that the types were implied in the setup dialogue!
Thank you all for your patience.
