Why do web pages in Firefox 12 keep timing out when the pages load in Opera? This is happening in Windows Xp, Ubuntu 10.04 and 12.04. Firefox is also very slow.

Good evening

Since Firefox 10 Firefox is getting slower and is timing out more. Almost all web pages timeout. On average I have to click on the 'Retry' button around 6 to 12 times before the page loads. This is extremely annoying and irritating. This is occurring in Windows XP SP3, Ubuntu 10.04LTS and Ubuntu 12.04LTS. The pages load faster in Opera. They do timeout in Opera but not to the extent they do in Firefox. I upgraded to Firefox 12 in the hope that these issues would be resolved. Unfortunately they have not been resolved.

How do I change the timeout value? Can someone pse do something to sort these issues out. From a search of the web I see that I am not the only one experiencing these issues.

Example of websites that constantly time out www.amazon.co.uk www.amazon.com www.youtube.com www.takealot.com www.sexydesktop.co.uk www.wallz.eu en.wikipedia.org/wiki www.lenagames.com

My hardware is as follows: 4GB memory NVidia GeForce 8400GS graphics card 500GB hard drive 1TB hard drive 2TB hard drive Intel Dual Core processor Huwaei 3G modem ISP: MWeb via Vodacom.

Windows and Ubuntu 10.04 installed on 500GB drive Ubuntu 12.04 installed on 2TB drive.

Hi,

You can try updating Firefox and check. Hopefully it'll be speedy.

If the problem persists, you can also try to reset Firefox and start afresh.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Hi dumdidadida

Tks for yr response. I have been having a huge problem the last two days updating Firefox 12 to Firefox 16. When i select update from the Help menu Firefox keeps timing out when it is connecting to the update server. i have, after three attempts managed to download the Firefox 16.02 setup file (South African version). I will install it and let you know the outcome. I also downloaded the Linux version. I will it if it does not update from the repositories.

Regards Philip

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

See:

If there are problems with updating then best is to download the full version of the Firefox installer and install that version.

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

Good evening.

Sorry that I am only replying now. My internet cap ran out.

I downloaded the Firefox 16.0.2 executable and installed it. I am still experiencing timeouts but they are fewer. I am using 'F-Secure Internet Secure 2012' anti-virus. I have checked all the settings and Firefox is not in any of the listings.

Hi again philipgr,

As this seems to be happening intermittently and with more than one browser though in a slightly different ratio, can you also please confirm the signal strength of the 3G modem and that it's steady. You could also temporarily try to shift the PC to another location and check.

If the signal strength is okay, you can also try setting No proxy in Tools (Alt + T) > Options > Advanced > Network > Settings.

You can also reset Firefox and start afresh.

If you would like to save a listing of the add-ons, changed preferences/settings etc. to quickly replicate the previous profile, please Copy all to clipboard (on the left of the reset button), and paste it into Office Excel, or OpenOffice/LibreOffice Calc, or notepad. However, it would be a good idea to check for the existence of the issue immediately after the reset.

Please note that the current version is 17.0.1. You can try to update via Help (Alt + H) > About Firefox, which would be much smaller than a full download of the new version.

Good evening dumdidadida

Thank you for yr continued assistance with my issue. The reason that I previously downloaded the Firefox exe file was tha each time I tried via the update button I kept receiving an error message that Firefox could not v connect to the update server. I was successful this evening in upgrading to 17.0.1.

I set the proxy setting to 'No proxy'. The result was that certain web sites refused to load: http://www.wallz.eu http://www.skins.be while others took forever to load and some did not load properly: http://www.amazon.co.uk http://www.takealot.com http://www.702.co.za/shows/solidgold.asp http://www.lenagames.com/bj_free.htm http://www.mweb.co.za/home.aspx

I am not able to move my 3G to another point as it is connected to a 3G aerial. I will try the reset option. I have made a copy of all my addons. If I reset will it clear all my Adblock entries? If so how can I save them?

Regards Philip

You can open the current profile folder via Firefox Help (Alt + H) > Troubleshooting Information > Show Folder. Go up one level, and copy/backup the whole profile folder. You can then reset Firefox. The reset also creates a folder named Old Firefox Data on the desktop.

Next open the profile folder from the newly reset Firefox, exit Firefox and create a folder named extensions. Now you can copy the file {d10d0bf8-f5b5-c8b4-a8b2-2b9879e08c5d} into this from either your backup or from inside Old Firefox Data\extensions. Also, go back one level and you need to copy/paste the adblockplus folder which is in the root folder of your backup/Old Firefox Data. At the next startup Firefox may ask for permission to install Adblock and you can continue. Hopefully all the filters will be in place.
