I followed the instructions for transferring Thunderbird data from an old PC to a new one. ("Moving Thunderbird Data to a new Computer"). The only email messages that made the transfer were the ones I saved from Outlook Express that were imported into Thunderbird on the old PC in 2014. None of the emails existing in my two important account folders (set up in 2014) made the move. Those, of course, are the most important ones. Now what? PS: I am not an IT professional, just a small business owner that needs to transfer emails from the last couple of years to a new PC because the old one is obsolete. PPS: It was not possible to install Thunderbird on the new PC without creating an account - - the installation program refused to move forward to complete the installation without doing this step. If I understand the instructions in "Moving Thunderbird Data to a New Computer, I was not supposed to create any accounts during the installation process. However, that proved impossible - - the installer would not complete the process without doing this and there was no option to skip creating accounts. After I made my first attempt to install the "Thunderbird" folder (containing the Profile folder, etc.) on the new PC, and finding my most important email messages didn't make the trip with the rest of the Thunderbird folder, I tried deleting the account I had set up as a required step in the installation process in order to install TB on the new PC, then uninstalling Thunderbird, in order to clear the account that I had set up (one of the ones I am trying to transfer over). In other words, I tried to start over with installing Thunderbird on the new PC. However, when I downloaded and installed Thunderbird the second time on the new PC, it reinstalled the account I had deleted!

Implementation of current Profile after T-Bird 128 Upgrade

I've been on Thunderbird for almost 20 years and a Mozilla fan. Have evolved a fairly elaborate configuration of local (POP) email folders, rules, calendar, and accounts to manage & organize email activity, retention, archiving, etc. I've not had to deal with Profiles in previous upgrades and don't have much experience with it.

The recent Oct 1 push of Firefox & Thunderbird 131.0 releases took me by surprise. I was able to re-implement the previous Firefox profile to recover bookmarks, cookies, passwords, etc. However, when T-Bird warned that 131.0 was Beta & unsupported I took the suggestion to download & install the current supported release: 128.3.0 (I was on 128.2.3). Then hell came.

Once downloaded, installed & launched, Thunderbird 128.3 cautioned the new profile created with T-Bird 131.0 was incompatible with previous versions and that I should create a new one, which I did. Still could not get new T-Bird to recognize previous profile, so I tried uninstalling, downloading & reinstalling 128.3 multiple times, each time prompted to create a new profile before proceeding. I tried to follow the previous profile restoration process detailed on support forums & articles, but none seemed specifically relevant to my situation.

I located my profiles in the appdata roaming profile folder, including what I think are most recent based on size of mail folders. Can't determine whether I had just one or several in use due to the extent of my setup. Could really use some help & advice to: 1) Determine which profile was in most recent use prior to T-Bird upgrade. 2) Whether more than one profile was in use. 3) Re-implement the profile I was using on T-Bird 128.2.3 with my new 128.3.0

Regards & many thanks in advance, John C Houston

PS You'll ask why I would upgrade to 131.0 from 128.2.3. Answer: it was on auto-update and 131.0 is what was pushed. No more auto-updates for this guy!

Use of last profile with downgraded Thunderbird (131.0->128.3)

How can I implement my previous profile in 128.3.0 after inadvertent (release channel) automatic update to 131.0 followed by downgrade (uninstall/download/reinstall from … (mear ynfo)

How can I implement my previous profile in 128.3.0 after inadvertent (release channel) automatic update to 131.0 followed by downgrade (uninstall/download/reinstall from thunderbird.net) to latest supported esr release, as recommended.

My last profile worked fine after auto update to 131.0 with emails, local folders, calendar, rules, contacts, etc. all available. Now, when attempting to launch or use that previous profile in reinstalled 128.3 popup advises: "You have launched an older version of Thunderbird." "A newer version of Thunderbird may have made changes to your profile which are no longer compatible with this older version. Use this profile only with that newer version or create a new profile."

Only options then available are "Exit" or "Create New Profile." TB 128.3 will recognize only a newly created generic profile, but not allow previous profile to be launched or set as default from Profile Manager.

Essentially, the options are: 1) Use your previous profile, but only with the Beta 131 release 2) Use the latest supported (128.3) release but only with a newly created profile, not yours.

I've seen this problem posted in several forms by people unknowingly on the "release" update channel who got the 131 release and can't implement their profile after downgrading to the esr release. The recommendations I've found to address this problem seem to lead one to a circular return to the problem.

I just ran a couple updates and now every time I open Thunderbird, Firebird opens also. On the ad screen to donate. This never happened until now. It is annoying since it opens over Thunderbird. How do I get it to stop? I do use it as my default browser, but when I want it. Thanks.

I followed the instructions to backup my profile. I rebuilt my system. Now I'm trying to restore. I did the install and tried to bring back the backup profile, it didn't work or even see it. So I deleted the other profile and left the backup one that I put in the same location as instructed. Not only didn't it work, it wouldn't even open. I ran the uninstall and tried to reinstall, as the website said. Now it says it installed but hasn't. It no longer shows up in the programs under control panel and says: "Your Firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible." So now I don't have Firefox at all.

Today I was notified Firefox version 131.0 had been installed. Now, when using the Charles Schwab website, I can't access my bank account, which is a separate entity, and requires me to use Schwab's access method. I've used this method/tool for a decade or more without incident until FF 131.0 showed up. Here's the error: "You might have cookies blocked or cross-site tracking prevented. Depending on what browser you're using, check your settings for these terms: • Block third party cookies • Cookie tracking • Cross-site tracking Make sure cookies are not blocked and cross-site tracking is enabled. Follow any additional instructions in your browser once you have adjusted these settings."

I've disabled "Enhanced Tracking Protection", cleared the browser of cookies and site data. I disabled Privacy Badger and Ghostery. None of which helps.

This procedure works using Firefox on an ios tablet. Also, it works with Microsoft Edge.

Thanks for any help. -Deke

Dear Thunderbird team I am an avid user of TB (home desktop Windows PCs), but I have been resting on my laurels on v78 for a few years now. I know, shame on me. I would like to upgrade to a stable "modern" release (emphasis on "stable" please). Can you please advise if I should aspire to end up on 115 or 128, and how I might get there ? From reading some older blogs, there is advice that says.... first go to v91, then v102, then v115, and so. That seems a bit tortuous, but I am happy to do so if that is still the recommended approach.

Also, can you advise on how I manage my Profile through all this, do I need to do various exports/imports as I move through these different versions, etc.

Many Thanks

Latest update (10/2/24) is impossible to use. How can I get back the prior version for Mac OS Sonoma 14.6.1 on my Macbook Air?

I have a TBI that really limits my ability to process information. The tabs now have a dropdown that is very confusing and gets in the way of my working. I have to shut Firefox and leave the computer, but of course when I am recovered from the confusion, I come back to the same situation.

I was able to find a way to stop the even-more-frustrating dropdown video preview, but it's not enough.

I have relied on FF for years, but it seem that putting more bells & whistles is more important than providing a functional browser interface. Please explain to me in plain English how to remove the overloaded browser and revert to a version I can utlize without a breakdown.

Win 10 64-bit. Updated to Ffx 131.0. Can't use most of my websites. It's blocking or preventing something. Had to use Chrome to re-do my mother's Walmart grocery order because it wouldn't load the screen to enter her EBT card PIN. Wouldn't log in to the State Farm website to pay bills. Downgrading to v 130. How to know when these problems are fixed?' I had to use Chrome instead. Some websites don't work w/ Ffx, such as California Lifeline (https://californialifeline.com/en/provider_search), but I can live with that. Chrome uses too many resources and slows my laptop to a crawl, and Edge is just... Ick. Can't get rid of it. Will try installing v 130 for now. I have too much info in Ffx to uninstall or reset it.

I and my clients LOVE Mozilla and Ffx, but I, for one, can't afford the time to beta-test like this. Lost the WM grocery pickup window for Mom because of this. Wasted way too much time on too many occasions & had to downgrade over and over. Programming since the 1970s, so I know better: Wait for the screams to die down before upgrading any software. My bad. Thought you should know at least a couple of the problems with the new update. BTW: Logged in, but had to search the web to find out how to post this question. Is there a quick way to report problems?

This is another moment where I have to post through my Mac Monterey when the problem is on Window 10 64-Bit. This problem surfaces when there is an update available to either program, though it seems like most times, not every time. Currently there is one available for Firefox that does not download. Previously the download installed on its own when this happened. I have shut down and restarted the system at least three times. At the last time I restarted in Safe Mode With Networking. It detected the update but would neither download nor check for updates. The message read to reinstall the new version. Is there any way to fix this updating problem once and for all? It is peculiar the Edge does not display this behavior. Right now what tabs I had open froze; so I had to use this system to post with Firefox for Mac Monterey. Thanks in advance.
