I've been attacked and my address is no longer accepting emails. The help I requested is going to cost me $56 to an organisation called JustAnswer
My customers cannot email me. I got a suspicious looking email today asking me to click on a link to verify my account or risk losing it. I did not click on the link but went looking for help from Thunderbird. I was redirected to a site where I had to pay for technical support and I paid by credit card. Have I been scammed?

Probably. Even if genuine $56 will not go a long way in obtaining professional services.
From your short message we have no idea whether the issue may be with Thunderbird, or whether it is some other problem
This is a public forum so do not provide your full email address it will only attract spam but who is the email provider ?
If it is a webmail account can you access it sucessfully by any other means using a browser such as Firefox on a computer, or for instance using a smartphone with a suitable app. That may help you determine whether it is receiving emails.
- What actually happens when a customer,
or you from some other account tries to send an email ?- What error message do you get ?
This message is going around. Only your provider can terminate your email account. If the message is not from them, just ignore it. If you really want to be sure contact your provider. Either way, this has nothing to do with Thunderbird. Thunderbird is email client software running on your computer and has nothing to do with your email service. I am not sure why you went looking to some unknown site for help and freely gave them your credit card. I would check your credit card activity right now. You may have more charges than the $56 you think you paid. DO NOT provider your credit card number you just anyone you find on the Internet!
And yes, I would say you have been scammed. This forum is the ONLY official Thunderbird help site.

What kind of account is it and what response do they get when they try to email you? Making sure you control your email account is probably more important than $56.
However, if you installed any software from the support company or gave them remote access to your computer, you will want to do some security checks first before entering passwords on any more websites to make sure you didn't catch any spyware.

Our email provider is vodafone new zealand. When I try to email from another address the message is undeliverable and the error message is as follows: 5.1.0 Unknown address error 550 Unknown user (Unrouteable address)
Can you check with the provider, using some means other than email, whether your account is in good standing?
