For the last several months some of my emails have ended up in the "Junk Mail" folder somehow. Previously all my junk mail went to "Junk" and was flagged with yellow flame and shortly deleted. The email now going to "Junk Mail" includes some from relatives and Medicare. Fortunately none is flagged as junk but of course is a pain to move to the inbox manually. Has there been a redesign of Thunderbird somehow causing email to end up in that directory? Is that something that my ISP Charter/Spectrum might be causing? Thanks, besides the constant "Not Responding" messages I get, this is making me wonder if I need to find another email program.

I posted this to the Linux Mint forum as I use that distro and they rely on Thunderbird as the email client. corresponding Linux Mint forum article

My workstation is a Thinkpad X220tablet Convertible running Linux Mint 19.3. All Mint distro provided (19 Oct 2020) updates are applied. I have several email accounts at various servers active in my T'bird application. All accounts are accessed with IMAP.

The text from my forum posting follows below.

Thanks in advance, ~~~ 0;-Dan Covington, LA

====================

I'm playing with [u]Google™ email address tricks/u and think that I found a [b]bug/b with Thunderbird™. I cannot discover how to post it to a T'bird or Mozilla® page so I'm posting the details here. see [url="https://smallbusiness.chron.com/gmail-email-address-tricks-41619.html#:~:text=Although%20Gmail%20allows%20users%20to,recognize%20and%20deliver%20your%20email"]Google Tricks/url.

Using T'bird v68.10.0 (64-bit), I select Kirk's account and send a message to Scotty. Both are Gmail addresses. [code]

    FROM: Kirk <kirk@gmail.com>
    TO: "scotty+stuff@gmail.com"
    ...

/code I used the T'bird GUI but my example reads like a terminal session. I needed to quotation marks in the TO address so that T'bird would ignore the plus sign.

After a brief delay, I'm told that there is a new message for Scotty. I open that message and see: [code]

    FROM: kirk@gmail.com
    TO: scotty+stuff@gmail.com
    ...

/code This is exactly what I expected. I also look at Kirk's SentMail folder and see the same FROM and TO information.

On detailed inspection, Scotty's inbox shows the new message as: [code]

    Correspondent: scotty+stuff@gmail.com

/code Huh? What?

Since Kirk sent the message, shouldn't his email or address book entry show as the Correspondent?

Looking at Kirk's other SentMessage data [list] [*] none are empty(blank) [*] all contain the TO email address or address book Contact Name /list

As a further test, I send a message using not-tricky email addressing: [code]

    FROM: kirk@gmail.com
    TO: scotty@gmail.com
    ...

/code Kirks SentMail folder shows a blank(empty) Correspondent field. Scotty Inbox also shows a blank(empty) Correspondent field. REPLY etc all direct messages correctly. Huh? What?

[b]DISCUSSION/b [i]What is going on with the Correspondent field contents. Is it something to do with the fact that both Kirk@gmail.com and Scotty@gmail.com are configured as accounts in the same T'bird session? Is something else going on?

Does the email trick "scotty+stuff@gmail.com" cause the message to be stored so that any REPLY comes back to Scotty -- because of the embedded plus-sign?

Clearly, the email trick is causing something to go haywire. Sadly, the what is going on is not clear beyond "it's not working" beyond message delivery.

Hi I have encountered a custom TBird setup I've never seen before. There is a POP account and some Local Folder email folders to back up. The previous technician relocated the POP account message storage directory to AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Mail\mail.hamilton.com and relocated the Local Folders message storage directory to Documents\Thunderbird. I obviously need to back up those directories. Is the only additional thing I need to back up the active profile directory? Does that cover everything? Thanks for the help! Josh

I received an email told me I had to change my account from Pop to IMAP. While attempting to do that, I managed to screw something up. Now, when I open Thunderbird, all of my folders are missing. When I try to get messages, my email provider (Yahoo) times out.The only thing that I can retrieve is my address book. Can someone slowly and carefully explained to me how I can retrieve my account?

I have always had challenges getting the recommended CPANEL server settings to work in Thunderbird. However, I managed to have them working fine until this week, after we had an issue with malware on our site, which was removed. We have all also had to completely reset our PCs due to this virus.

Now, I had to use truly bizarre settings (compared to the recommendations) in order to get Thunderbird to work with my emails.

However, some of my team cannot get their OUTGOING mail to work at all, no matter what setting we have tried. We have exhausted our creativity, research, and troubleshooting with Godaddy.

Attached are: 1 the settings recommended in Godaddy CPANEL, 2 the incoming and outgoing settings I got to work for me.

Any thoughts?

A strange problem suddenly, as of today (19 Oct):

I have set up Thunderbird to download my Gmail messages automatically, which it's doing (mail is disappearing from Gmail as expected), and my Thunderbird folders are showing numbers in brackets to indicate new unread emails ( e.g. Inbox (3), eBay (10) ) -- but when I open any folder, there are no new emails displaying, just old ones prior to today.

When I send test emails to myself from Gmail, they are automatically downloaded, and the Inbox folder icon shows additional new unread emails -- but there are no new emails in the actual Inbox.

Any ideas? Never experienced this problem before.

I get a lot of SMS from gmail and often filter them, select all then mark as read, so as to keep them archived, but out of my unread inbox. Something lagged, or otherwise bugged out and this time after clearing the filter I noticed ALL my inbox was marked as read. Is there any way to undo/reverse this? I even have hourly backups of the INBOX file, but after restoring it, it still looks like everything is read (maybe the GMAIL side is syncing them to be marked as read?). I use read/unread as a way to keep track of what I have and have not responded to yet, so this is quite the blow to my workflow and would potentially take hours if not more to recover manually from. If there is no way to reverse this, how can I ensure this won't happen again?

Why would all of a sudden would all emails in my Yahoo inbox be moved. Initially they were all moved to "delete folder" but now a day later they are not in either the inbox or delete folder. Messages are being transferred to Thunderbird though - Thank goodness, other wise I wouldn't be seeing the email. The other issue is when the messages were all sitting in the Yahoo delete folder and then restored to the Yahoo inbox, every email would then be transferred to Thunderbird again. Any ideas of what is going on and more importantly, how to fix it?? Caz

Using Thunderbird 78.3 on a Mac, but I know this issue has been around for a little while. Have tried searching in this support forum and more generally on the internet but don't seem to find any resolutions - so it might be a user problem with an option not set correctly...

I have "check spelling before sending" set in preferences so if I finish an email Thunderbird will spellcheck immediately. However if an error is found the pop-up box appears over the mail text obscuring it, so the spelling error is not seen in context of the sentence.

There may be occasions when an error is reported but it's actually correct, whereas other times needs correcting. However without seeing that full sentence a determination can't be made. The pop-up box is immovable...

I do have "enable spellcheck as you type" selected, but whilst typing with head down sometimes you don't notice the errors being highlighted... (sorry, not touch typist).

If that pop-up box could be floating and moveable by selecting the title bar and mouse-moving it to another screen location that would be very useful, and hopefully it remembers that position for any other errors found.

I appreciate that Mozilla is performing the underlying spellcheck operation rather than Thunderbird, but I would assume the pop-up box is Thunderbird rather than Mozilla?

Apologies if this is a user error, and in which case please do point me in the right direction to fix it.

Thanks...

I upgraded to the native OpenPGP mechanism.

Twice in the passed week all my keys vanished. I was just reading emails when I got a message that there was no matching key. When I checked "OpenPGP Key Manager" it was empty.

I can't find anything about this problem affecting anyone else.

I'm using 78.3.3 (32-bit). Thanks in advance.

Hi all I had in the options of Thunderbird 68 a directory server entry created, pointing towards our Active directory. I used the SLL Global Catalog LDAP port TCP 3269. Everything worked fine until Thunderbird got automatically updated to version 78 a few weeks ago. Now I can only use the non-SSL port 3268, that works without further modifications but SSL on TCP 3269 does not. There is no error displayed but also never any result from LDAP when inserting recipients. On another PC, where TB 68 is still installed, the SSL query still works. Please give help, how it is possible to switch back to more secure SSL for the directory query.

Config: Hostname: ad01.home.example.com (FQDN of the active directory host) Base DN: dc=home,dc=example,dc=com Port number: 3269 Bind DN: low_priv_username@home.example.com SSL <checked>

I changed ISP providers moved my domain and email services.

I created a new folder in thunderbird that points to the new servers but retained the old email.

I still want to have visibility to my old file structure, I have the file before the change.

How do I import these emails, or how do I create a new folder and point the folder to the old file structure.

I think an older version of thunderbird use to allow me to do this as I have a local folder that points to an old email structure.

Current version - 68.12.1

Problem: Occasionally I need to refer to emails from a few weeks ago, or a few years ago, and once in a while I can't find the email I'm looking for. These are emails I know to exist (from a print-out, or from quoted material in another email), but they no longer appear in my Inbox or any of my local boxes.

I do not have whole months or years of missing emails, just random emails here and there that I can no longer find. They're not in Trash, not Archived -- just not there any more.

Any idea what might be happening here?
