Firefox freezes after I add a bookmark

After I add a bookmark Firefox freezes. It starts as soon as the save bookmarks dialogue box appears so I can't choose where to save the bookmark but after the freeze ends (about 20-30 seconds) the bookmark has been saved.

I also have another problem that might be related. After I delete a bookmark it takes a while for the bookmarks sidebar to update so when I click on a bookmark I am selecting either the previous or following bookmark, depending on where the dleted bookmark was.

Problems with bookmarks and history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.

Open a new tab or window. type about:support in the address box and press enter. Or Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the tool bar. Then Help > Troubleshooting Information.

Under the page logo on the left side you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To it’s right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Locate the file. Then rename or delete it. Restart Firefox.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} While you are in safe mode; Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the tool bar. Followed by;

Windows; Tools > Options Linux; Edit > Preferences Mac; application name > Preferences

Then Advanced > General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.

Poke around safe web sites. Are there any problems?

Then restart.

I can't get the toolbar to appear with Alt or F10. Is there another way to access the toolbar?

OK, I understand now. Just go to Firefox preferences and turn off Hardware Acceleration.

It was OK in safe mode but when I restarted Firefox was frozen so I had to force quit, restart in Safe Mode and turn Hardware Acceleration back on.

Thanks for your suggestions.

This morning, after another restart the freeze after adding bookmarks is gone after doing 1. Thank you!

The "freeze" (I guess it's really a L-O-N-G delay) after deleting/editing bookmarks is still happening. Is it possible to have too many bookmarks? I do have a lot of them.

I have two thoughts. 1) Copy the bookmarks, remove them, then restore. 2) Save your current profile, reset Firefox, then restore your profile. Let me know what you want to try. # 2 may be better.

Install this, please. It can help.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backup of files that you choose.
