address bar - most used website addresses

writemadhu

Don't know where it should be. But here is the issue: I check my personal email often, so I used to open Firefox, click the address bar, and my Outlook would be at the top. Now, for whatever reason, Firefox tries very hard to make that disappear, even though that is my most-used website. First, it'll drop a few places in drop-down, then some more, and then disappear. To bring it back, I'll have to delete unwanted links (the ones I open like once a month!) from history, and after quite a bit of work, Outlook will be back. Then rinse and repeat.....How can I fix this?

Hi writemadhu,

Firefox's address bar suggestions aren't based only on how often you visit a website. Other factors, including bookmarks and your browsing history, can affect which results appear and their order.

You could try bookmarking Outlook so it remains easy to find. Open Outlook, click the star in the address bar, and save it as a bookmark. You can then type part of its name or address into the address bar to find it.

You can also pin it in the address bar suggestions: type Outlook's address, wait for it to appear in the drop-down, then use the arrow keys to select it and press **Shift + Delete** only if you intend to remove it—not to pin it. The pinning options can vary depending on the suggestion and Firefox version.

More information about how address bar suggestions work is available here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/address-bar-autocomplete-firefox

Thanks. I know about other things I can do and thank you for listing them. However, other factors such as bookmarks and my browsing history or anything isn't making sense. As I said, it used to be fine earlier and outlook was always at the top but now it really tries to get rid of it and then pretty hard to bring it back. Anyway, I'll wait for the next update maybe that fixes it. Thank you.

Yes something is not right. Outlook slowly went to the bottom and disappeared again. Since then, I have typed it in the address bar and opened it countless times, but it still isn't showing up. However, the websites that I browsed for the first time in my life immediately appeared there and not going away. BTW, "Shift+Delete" no longer deletes those addresses (it does work for the ones that show up in the address bar as trending). To delete those, I have to open the history tab and delete them. Too much work. But even after doing that, outlook doesn't show up unless you delete tons of previous web addresses. I am not messing with Firefox anymore until this is fixed.

Hi writemadhu,

Thank you for the update and for providing those details. I completely understand your frustration, especially when a routine workflow like opening your most-used email site suddenly requires so much manual effort.

The fact that new sites are sticking immediately while Outlook drops away—and that Shift + Delete is only targeting trending suggestions now—strongly points to a glitch in Firefox's local "frecency" database (which calculates frequency and recency) or an underlying profile issue rather than a standard configuration change.

Since managing this through history is too much work, we can check two specific areas to see if we can resolve the root database glitch:

1. Resetting Address Bar Settings You can check if resetting the address bar's internal indexing fixes the sorting logic. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security, and scroll down to the "Address Bar" section. Try toggling off "History" and "Bookmarks" completely, closing Firefox, and then turning them back on to force a database re-index.

2. Testing a New Profile Sometimes the local database file holding your history score gets corrupted over multiple browser updates. You can check if this is the case by creating a temporary clean profile without losing any of your data. Type "about:profiles" into your address bar, click "Create a New Profile", and launch it. Try navigating to Outlook a few times there to see if it locks to the top correctly.

If the new profile handles it normally, it means your primary history file is stuck, and we can look at safely refreshing it.

Best regards, Max
