If people are familiar with speedtest.net, there is an analogue-like "speedometer" which should move relatively smoothly during both the download and upload tests. For several years it always did; now the download test does not. The needle starts and stops in fits/jerks. It runs properly in IE9 though. Not sure when this peculiarity began; possibly with Firefox 17. Any thoughts? Many thanks.

hello allen, speedtest uses flash for speed measurements & adobe has introduced a special protected mode for its flash plugin only for firefox, which might cause slowdowns (so you might not observe it on IE or other browsers).

if there's a possibility to whitelist certain processes in your av-program from sandboxing/deep-scanning/etc. please add firefox.exe, plugin-container.exe & FlashPlayerPlugin_11*.exe.

alternatively you can also try disabling the protected mode for adobe flash or downgrade to flash 10.3 (it is still supported by adobe) & see if this is making a difference...
