Hi modemhunt, could you try the following?

  1. Click the Firefox menu Fx89menuButton button at the top-right corner.
  2. Select the Settings menu item. The Settings tab will open.
  3. In the General panel, scroll down to the Applications section.

Does it say "Open with Firefox"? If so, change it to "Save File"

You can right click the link and save it.

that does not always work, for example i am on a website which has a download button for a pdf, so i can only click the button to download it, hence giving me no option otherwise.
