Hi vijmail18_2003, here's the situation:

Firefox ended support for "Vista-based" versions of Windows, which includes the original Windows Server 2008, a while ago. The last version for "Vista-based" versions of Windows was the Extended Support Release of Firefox 52.

Firefox currently supports "Windows 7-based" (and later) versions of Windows, which includes Windows Server 2008 R2.

I realize it's crappy that Microsoft didn't offer R2 as a free update for the original Windows Server 2008, but that is ten years behind us now, and not Mozilla's fight.

If you are think you are running R2 but Firefox won't install:

If you open a command window (cmd.exe) and run ver what version does your Windows Server 2008 report?

  • 6.0.x => treated like Vista => Firefox 53+ will not install
  • 6.1.x => treated like Windows 7 => install should work

If your Firefox is misreporting the version as 6.0 when it should be 6.1, clear the Compatibility settings of your Firefox shortcut (right-click > Properties > Compatibility) and any custom user agent string (How to reset the default user agent on Firefox).

By the way, the "Extended Support End Date" for Server 2008 was two weeks ago (Jan. 14, 2020). Time to update!

You will have to install the 32-bit Firefox version on your OS and not the 64-bit version.

The installer detects that as Windows Vista, so won't install on that version.
