How do I get thunderbird get to see the apple mail files to import or merge?

I am trying to import or merge apple mail files into thunderbird. But thunderbird will not see the apple files needed , is there away to get this to work correctly. I have several domain email accounts I want to use with thunderbird, but can not get the old messages in to the program thunderbird..

Please advise how I can do this?
