Firefox won't launch Zimbra Desktop for mailto links

more options

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit Core 2 Duo

Running Firefox 26.

Installed Zimbra Desktop Email client, when I click mailto links it only offers Yahoo and Gmail.

In IE and other programs Zimbra launches when I use email features of those programs.

Zimbra is set to default email client.

Also strangely enought the download button in the top right doesn't work, I can see downloads but when I click the button nothing.

Usually Firefox will discover your default email client through the registry and offer that one prominently.

Sometimes the file that stores file associations becomes corrupted with conflicting entries and no longer updates correctly. The workaround is simply to rename the file and have Firefox regenerate it. If you'd like to try that, here's what you do.

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using

Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button

Leaving that window open, wwitch back to Firefox and Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename mimeTypes.rdf to something like mimeTypes.old

Restart Firefox. Hopefully now Zimbra will be detected and you can select it. Please note that if you previously changed your setting for PDFs from the built-in viewer to another one, you will need to change that again.

The forum software detected your Firefox as version 21. Is that correct?

Version 21 is not secure; Mozilla discloses security flaws after each new release. Is something holding you back from upgrading to Firefox 26? Please let us know so we can suggest solutions or workarounds.

If Help > About Firefox shows Firefox 26.0, you may need to clear the preference that is misreporting your version number. See: How to reset the default user agent on Firefox.

It was a brand new install of Windows + Firefox 26 + Zimbra Desktop, one of several machines I am deploying. I am an IT manager for a mid size company (50+users). I thought there is no way deleting mime types will work. But I figured I better try before I argue. That did the trick, it worked. Thank you sir. Awesome.

I was entering the original question from a different computer with an older version of FF, I opted out of including that info so it wouldn't confuse anybody but apparently you get it anyway?

Hi dpannone, the old version information showed up in the "tags" area next to your question. That probably isn't obvious until after you post and come back and look at the thread. Anyway, glad to hear that wasn't an issue with the machine you were posting about. As for the other one... time to upgrade?
