I'm running Firefox 20.0.1 on Win7 x64 and all of a sudden, all JAVA-scripts freezes and i can do nothing but wait. After about 30sec i get a message saying that...

'A script on this page may be busy or have stopped responding. You can stop the script now or wait for the script to complete' (or similar).

I get the message in Swedish so it's roughly translated. I included some screenshots of the error (all from different pages).

It works fine in safe mode and when i disable JAVA. I can't think of anything more right now, and i actually need to write this message using Chrome because i can't get here using Firefox anylonger.

It sucks and really need your help. Thanks!

Have tried to:

  • Restore Firefox to its default settings.
  • Uninstalled/reinstalled JAVA
  • Uninstalled/reinstalled Firefox

Attached image to message instead.

Does this happen on every website? if it happened only on a specific website, that could simply mean that the site's script was poorly written, etc.

I'm assuming by "JAVA-scripts", you mean JavaScript, not Java. Correct?

Thanks!

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

Thanks for replying guys.

Epicaleb>> I'm not sure if it's Java or JavaScript as i've now understood that it's 2 different things? Just thought scripts was written in Java. And yes, every script on any page freezes this way.

core-el>> I actually already tried in Safe Mode, switching to default theme and disabling hardware accelleration (the Advanced tab) but i missed posting it in my description. However, i tried these things one more time just to be sure but still the same problem. As soon as the browser hits Java, Safe Mode or not, it halts. No problem in IE8 or latest Chrome though.

I hate not being able to use FireFox any more :(

ry a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you will lose all personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.

If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

OK, you said you've tried "restoring Firefox to its default settings". Does that mean you followed Firefox >> Help >> Troubleshooting Information >> Reset Firefox?

If you haven't yet, maybe that'll help (but not in Safe Mode!!!).

Also, try visiting about:config in the Awesome Bar. Once you've entered Firefox's config menu, search for 'script'. Survey everything that's bolded (it will also say "user set"). Does anything look funny? If so, right-click on it and reset it to default.

Thanks again.

Epicaleb>> I used about:config, got 4 results when searching for script, 1 referring to something with Java, resetted to default. The other 3 belonged to the theme and Adblock Plus. Unfortunately, no difference.

cor-el>> Tried it step by step. Uninstalled FF, removed the remaining Mozilla Firefox folder in 'Program Files x86' containing some data. Also searched the registry manually but did not really find anything interesting. Installed a fresh copy but same problem :( :(

Created a new profile using firefox.exe -P but issue remains. Even created a new Windows profile and logged into the new account.

It seems nothing helps. Soon giving up :(

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

Just tried starting Windows in Safe Mode to see if any other running tasks where causing issues but problem remain.

I just realized something! If everything works fine in Firefox's Safe Mode, it is impossible for whatever's happening to be the fault of JavaScript!

You see, JavaScript is enabled by default, even in Safe Mode.

When you said that you "disabled Java", did you go into the Add-Ons Manager to do it?

If so, everything should be just about clear.

Have tried disabling HW accelleration earlier from the Advanced menu. Now tried this:

Crossed my fingers, but no :-/

What process did you follow when you "disabled Java"? Sorry that I keep coming back to it, but I think that it could be important.

Hi again!

cor_er>> As posted by me on 5/12/13 2:50 PM i have already tried disabling hardware acceleration on the Advanced tab (Use hardware acceleration when available).

Epicaleb>> Aah, sorry, some kind of typo by me in the first message. It does Not work even when starting Firefox in Safe Mode when Java is enabled. Don't know how i got that sentence together. I just tried it again to be sure. It's like Java refuses to work with Firefox any longer. How can all Java suddenly become unresponsive no matter what?

Also, to answer your question, i disable Java from Tools/Settings/Content/Enable JavaScript (hope that's correctly translated).

I promise you guys that i'm dedicated in trying things exactly as adviced and appreciate your assistance. I'm not a noob per se as i've used computers all my life and worked 7 years as a network support tech (and 6 years before that on computer support) knowing how frustrating it can be when customers don't follow or skip advice as given.

Thanks.

Would you please tell me what you did to "disable Java"? Thank you!

Whoops, you answered my question already. Ignore my last post, sorry!

RedFarmer said: "Also, to answer your question, i disable Java from Tools/Settings/Content/Enable JavaScript (hope that's correctly translated)."

That disables JavaScript, not Java. Most websites will not work properly with JavaScript disabled.

Java is disabled by going to Add-ons > Extensions and disabling Java SE Runtime there, then restarting Firefox.

Yes, RedFarmer said that it was JavaScript. However:

@RedFarmer: It'd be great if you write "JavaScript". "Java" is an entirely different language, so it can be a little confusing if you say "Java" although you mean "JavaScript". :-)

Also: did you have a suitable antivirus suite running on your computer?

What happens when you use Aurora or Firefox Beta?

more options

Sorry i'm mixing up Java with JavaScript. As all my screenshots show, it's always things called .js that gets unresponsive so i guess that's JavaScript. It also works fine when i unhook Tools/Settings/Content/Enable JavaScrip, but as TheOldFox wrote, most sites does not work properly after this.

I installed FireFox 21.0b7 but did not notice any difference. Also, i'm not running any antivirus or other security applications which probably is kind of stupid, but i'm behind a HW firewall and is pretty cautious of what i do.

I must give credit for the speed of the feedback i get on this forum. Applause! I just wish i could write soon that we found the solution. I'm starting to get sick of Chrome and IE ;)

You can try to disable the JavaScript JIT compiler.
You can check Boolean javascript.options prefs (javascript.options.*jit) on the about:config page.

In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:

  • all extensions are disabled
  • the default theme is used (no persona)
  • userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored
  • the default toolbar layout is used (localstore-safe.rdf)
  • the Javascript JIT compiler is disabled
  • hardware acceleration is disabled
  • plugins are not affected
  • preferences are not affected

@ cor-el: Actually, RedFarmer just said that nothing works, even in Safe Mode. RedFarmer has to disable JavaScript from running in the browser in order to not encounter the problem.

@RedFarmer: Did I get the above comment to cor-el correct? Also, try another about: config keyword. Look for "javascript". Unless it's an add-on or extension, reset any javascript configuration to default.

Also, run a virus removal tool such as AVG Removal Utilities or the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool on your PC, and it'd also be a great idea to install an antivirus suite. Windows Defender is a no-frills antivirus package that is integrated into Windows 7 and Windows 8. You can quickly activate it from the Security tab in the Windows Action Center. Or, you can get something else like AVG Free.

Have you tried Firefox Aurora yet?

I MISSED THIS: Go to about:support. Scroll through the entire page. Look at everything. If something seems out of place, go change it in about:config to default.
