Hi. I'm losing all bookmarks after every update, need to use mozbackup every couple of days. This is frustrating!

For a few months now on both my computers I'm having the same problem. After every update (or so I think) I lose all of my bookmarks. There are none on bookmarks tab and when I go into my bookmarks menu, all the folders are there, but they are empty. I have to use mozbackup to restore bookmarks from a backup (if I have one handy). The restore doesn't work If I tick in the mozbackup menu more than bookmarks (for example settings). If I do, that restores the previous firefox version, which during the next restart updates and the bookmarks are gone again.

I don't what to do, that's really frustrating.

Hello,

Firefox automatically creates backups of your bookmarks, which can be helpful if your bookmarks are lost or missing. To recover them, follow the instructions below.

  1. Use one of these methods to open the Bookmarks Library window:
    • Firefox 29 and above: Click the Bookmarks button Bookmarks-29 and select Show All Bookmarks.
    • Previous Firefox versions: Click the Firefox button and click on Bookmarks. (If you don't have a Firefox button, click the Bookmarks button Bookmarks button win 2 or Bookmarks menu item and select Show All Bookmarks.)
  2. At the top of the Library window, click on Import and Backup and select Restore.
  3. Click the date of the bookmark backup you want to recover.
  4. In the new window that appears, click OK.
  5. Your bookmarks from the selected date should now be restored.

For more information, see the Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer article. For other solutions, see the Recover lost or missing Bookmarks article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Thank you.

Yeah, automatic answers are great, but not in this case.

That doesn't solve my problem of the bookmarks being deleted in the first place. I'm doing fine with my mozbackup, I just want to STOP doing that every couple of days! I do a lot of research every day and losing even 1 day means losing a lot of data.

Mozbackup is third party software by the way. For all I know that may be causing some of your problems.

Myself and other users are not losing bookmarks. You mention you lose bookmarks on updates of Firefox.

You say you have a problem every couple of days, that will not tally with Firefox updates. Firefox may have some additional updates, but the main updates are about every 6 weeks. You should not lose bookmarks when Firefox updates.

Something odd is happening with your install of Firefox so consider trying a Refresh or a Clean reinstall. Note a Refresh will remove your extensions.

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove your Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. This process does not remove your Firefox profile data (such as bookmarks and passwords), since that information is stored in a different location.

To do a clean reinstall of Firefox, please follow these steps: Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu New Fx Menu and click the close button Close 29).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.

WARNING: Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your Firefox profile data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device! See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.

Please report back to say if this helped you!

Thank you.
