This is basically a copy of what I put in the Ubuntu forum. The problem is the same, no matter where I post it.

Originally I was using Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

I thought it would be good to update to GG (20.10) though I did briefly try FF (20.04).

As the install was done on an existing 18.04 version things remained the same for programs, book marks, etc.

Ok, now the crunch: I USE Firefox ""A LOT"". When it loads, there are...... 8 x 6 windows of FireFox and each of those have anywhere from one to ""THIRTY"" tabs loading.

Believe me: ""It worked!!""

I could use it, also run other tasks as well - though a VM was pushing it with the RAM. But the entire machine worked.

Now, I am lucky if FireFox loads at all. Let alone let me browse.

When it loads some of the window's tops are flashing. A screen shot does not really show this. (I tried)

All that has changed is the O/S from 18.04 and Firefox from (what ever it was) to 83.0

I don't want this to be a finger pointing exercise between Mozilla and Ubuntu. I would prefer it is helpful to all.

What have I tried? I've tried starting FireFox with all addons disabled. Still happens.

I am going to try to remember to (next time) launch FireFox from a Terminal and pipe the output to a file to look for things.

The machine I am using has shown it is well up to being able to have this running. I have had it working for a few years like this.

This post is (for now) to establish there is a problem. I will post more information when I get it, rather than waiting to get it then post, as I feel there are a lot of people who have very similar problems and I want it known: ""You are not alone!""

Now a bit of extra stuff.

Other things which are weird: When I am watching stuff - youtube for example - the playback is/WAS jerky. I hadn't touched anything in the settings.

After digging around, I discovered that I had to turn ""OFF"" the hardware acceleration for the graphics. Question: How did it get turned on? (Semi rhetorical)

I have a lot of local pages I open with passwords. When I load them the CPU load goes through the roof and nearly invariably the program just exits. No crash report.

Which is a good 50% of how it happens. The other 50% is the machine just locks up and I have to power it down.

Noticed on the latest release of Firefox after I press quit(I have multiple windows) the process will not fully close; I've confirmed this on both Windows and Ubuntu versions. It seems to happen when I have videos playing while closing as they will continue to play in the background.

Only way to fully close the app is to stop the running background process; the videos cannot be stopped as they are CCTV streams.

I'm not familiar with logging with FF if someone can advise on which ones would be of interest I can provide them.

When I click on any Zoom link in Firefox 83 on Linux, nothing happens. It seems like Firefox has no idea that the zoommtg:// protocol exists.

I've tried:

  • checking that Firefox is not installed from a snap
  • manually setting the network.protocol-handler.expose.zoommtg and network.protocol-handler.external.zoommtg preferences to true
  • running xdg-open 'zoommtg://...' in a terminal (this works fine, it's how I finished the Zoom SSO login)

I am migrating my wordpress based website to a new computer with a LEMP stack on Ubunto 20.04. I wish to access and test the website using the firefox browser offline. I have modified my local dns (/etc/hosts) file to include my site's url but firefox can't find it. Firefox manages to find the nginx greeting and it finds phpmyadmin which is used to manage my database, but it can't locate the wordpress web pages.

One might think I had a problem with my nginx server blocks, but that's not the case because google chrome finds the web pages with no problem.

FIrefox appears to reach out to the internet dns by default and ignore the localhost dns settings. So how do I change Firefox's default settings so that it can access websites on the same computer like Google Chrome does?

Hi, everyone!

I found a similar solution but only for "Open link in new tab": you can go to about:config and change the preference named browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground. But I want the same thing for my saved bookmarks on Bookmarks Toolbar. Sometimes I need to open a few bookmarks from one folder and then I used for it middle-click or click on Open in new tab, but it switches to tab immediately and I should repeat a process again: click on a folder, find a bookmark, click on it, new tab opened and so on. So is there an option to open bookmarks in background tabs? How can I achieve that?

I have a piece of code which has worked fine since I wrote it almost 20 years ago and which has only been fine tuned as the standards for JavaScript have been refined over those two decades. The functionality is to act when the user stops typing into a textbox for 0.9 seconds, which by trial and error I found was fast enough to act without premature invocation because the user was just typing slowly.

```javascript // in the initialization code element.addEventListener('keydown', onKeyDownName); ... function onKeyDownName(event) {
   if (timer)
       clearTimeout(timer);
   timer   = setTimeout(update, 900);
   alert("nominalIndex.js: onKeyDownName: timer=" + timer)
} // function onKeyDownName
function update() {
   alert("nominalIndex.js: update:");
   // perform the function
} ```
The alerts are only inserted, on my private test site only, to try and debug why this code is no longer working. Each time I type a character I see the alert "nominalIndex.js: onKeyDownName: timer=nnn" but no matter how long I wait I never see the alert "nominalIndex.js: update:". To get the function to work the user must take some other action which causes the function update to be called. There are no messages in the log to explain why the timer isn't popping. How can I debug this?
The code works on Chromium 87.0.4280.88 but doesn't work on FireFox 83.0 build id 20201112153044. I am running Ubuntu Linux 20.04
See this code in action at www.jamescobban.net/FamilyTree/nominalIndex.php?name=Culbert%2C%20Su&treename=&lang=en
Hi everyone :)
I didn't find anything about it: I'm looking for a shortcut to open links in the private window without opening the context menu (right click)
I know that.....:
  • CTRL + Click open in a new Tab (Or middle click)
  • CTRL + SHIFT + Click open in a new Tab and focus on this new tab (or SHIFT + middle click)
  • SHIFT + Click open the link in a new Window
But actually I didn't find any combination to open it in a new private window. Even the context menu "Open Link in a new private window" isn't what I'm looking for as I don't want the new window to be on top.
Is there a way to do it, maybe an extension ?
Thanks for reading, Alex.
Running Firefox on Ubuntu 20.04, Windows 10, and Android 11. versions 83.0, 83.0, and 83.1.0 respectively.
As of 12/10/2020 discovered that on Ubuntu 20.04 Firefox would not get to cdc.gov and gave message "server not found".
On 12/11/2020 I started digging a bit deeper.
  • Firefox on the Ubuntu and Windows hosts, both on home WiFi (Optimum, public IP 24.47.128.216) does not get to cdc.gov with message "server not found".
  • Firefox on Android 11 (WiFi connected and LTE at 3 bars) does connect to cdc.gov. Don't know how to tell if connection via WiFi or LTE.
  • Firefox on Ubuntu and Windows hosts using USB tethering to phone for Internet does not connect to cdc.gov.
  • Chrome 87.0.4280.88 and Chromium 87.0.4280.88 on Ubuntu and Windows hosts on home WiFi connect to cdc.gov
  • Edge 87.0.664.60 on Windows host on home WiFi connects to cdc.gov
Seems Firefox desktop for Ubuntu and Windows is having some kind of problem with cdc.gov. Have tried running in Safe Mode and selecting Restart with add ons disabled and Refresh Firefox. Neither option has resolved problem.
What's wrong?
hello, i have a Raspberry Pi 4 with 4GB and Raspberry Pi OS installed. (2020-05-27-raspios-buster-armhf.zip)
when i use the stock Firefox ESR (installed via sudo apt install firefox-esr) and watch videos (e.g. on Youtube, Vimeo, ...), Firefox does crash some times. according about:crashes, i already have submitted about 60 crash reports.
but watching the reports one thing is missing. when i open firefox from the console i can see some output, that is not appearing in the reports.
... firefox-esr: /build/firefox-esr-RgOFaD/firefox-esr-68.11.0esr/media/libcubeb/src/cubeb_alsa.c:1255: alsa_stream_get_position: Assertion `delay >= 0' failed. ExceptionHandler::GenerateDump cloned child 3366 ExceptionHandler::SendContinueSignalToChild sent continue signal to child ExceptionHandler::WaitForContinueSignal waiting for continue signal... Exiting due to channel error. Exiting due to channel error. Exiting due to channel error. Exiting due to channel error. Failed to open curl lib from binary, use libcurl.so instead Firefox ESR crashes when playing videos on Raspberry Pi OS (Debian)
during watching videos in firefox there is more different output to see that seems to be harmless. but always and only this line is printed to console, just befor Firefox crashes: firefox-esr: /build/firefox-esr-RgOFaD/firefox-esr-68.11.0esr/media/libcubeb/src/cubeb_alsa.c:1255: alsa_stream_get_position: Assertion `delay >= 0' failed. so i assume this is the main reason, why Firefox crashes on my system.
any idea how i can get these issue fixed? at the moment when i want to watch videos reliable i am be forces to use the external VLC Player by copy the url to VLC - at least for Youtube videos. but i want to watch videos from other web pages as well and i prefer to watch videos in firefox directly.
