I cannot set an IMAP account for a particular mail server. The settings are known good (work in other clients) The server is absolutly an IMAP server. the login fails no matter what i try. If I recreate the account but make it pop 3 it works fine, but IMAP will not.

The settings used are at this link, under IMAP: https://www.rit.edu/its/services/email/setup/setup_exchange_quick_reference.html

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Alan

Did you try manual set-up using the server settings as per the link you posted?

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/manual-account-configuration

Yep did full manual, as well as just manual on the server name, and allowed auto detect. Auto detect found correct port numbers, but still didn't work. Basically, it is as if there is something being changed in the username or password behind the scenes...

I have never had an issue setting up an account before, but this just won't log in.

Please try to disable your anti-virus software when setting up the account.

Chris,

Ok, will try that, but all other accounts in thunderbird (IMAPs) and this account (as a pop3) all get through ok... does that make sense?

Thanks,

Alan

Chris,

Disabling virus protection did not work, also on a different PC with different Virus protection and fire wall, I have the same issue. The issue might coincide with an update to thunderbird, breaking this one account, all other accounts are fine.

The account stopped working on both PCs and despite changing passwords, deleting and recreating, nothing seems to change.

Thanks,

Alan

Did you find a place in Thunderbird to enter that domain name? If not:

Some Exchange servers expect the domain before the username in this format:

main.ad.rit.edu\username

Not sure whether that is applicable if you don't need to use that format for POP access, but give it a try.

Thanks,

I don't know if IMAP needs the domain name listed there, but Thunderbird doesn't seem to have a place to enter the domain name, so I haven't been able to try that....

I appreciate the help though - if you know where I should enter it, I will try. I DID try entering the domain in the format you suggested as the servername, but that failed...

On the Server Settings panel of the Account Settings dialog, add the domain before your username in the User Name slot, in the format from my earlier post.

Just tried that, but I am afraid it still fails on login....

are you logged into the RIT domain on your windows machine?

Those IMAP settings look to me like they might just expect you to be "domain Connected" to the network

Matt,

No, I am not logged into the RIT domain. Anything you can suggest would be great - even the right questions to ask the RIT help desk would be great. They tried to help but couldn't solve the issue, and just said "we don't support T/B" and left me on my own.

Thanks,

So your not a student or alumni?

It is that Kerberos for SMTP that gets me. That requires a token server to be .

Try the It people with how to you connect your computer to the issuing trust tokens

So I think the answer is ask the IT people how you connect your computer to the Kerberos/GSSAPI realm so the SMTP can authenticate. I have a feeling there is a VPN in your future, but we will see.

I am adjunct faculty, so mostly off campus. Thanks for your suggestions - I will try to talk with them today, and let you know.

Matt,

The IT folks didn't seem to have the depth to answer the question you posed, but insisted that it was not necessary to be logged into the RIT domain. They asked me to bring my machine to campus for them to fiddle with, so I guess I will try that...

Thanks again,

Alan

At least you have their attention :) So much for "We don't support Thunderbird"

Please let me know how you get on... And if not well, do you have access to Outlook Web Access (OWA) from the RIT system?
