Windows 7, Thunderbird 24.4.0

I have been having some issues with Thunderbird not downloading emails. It does not do it even though it is scheduled to do it every 15 minutes, nor will it download email when I click the GET MAIL button. Nothing happens! It does not even make an attempt to download. I know this because the progress bar does not appear and nothing is downloaded even though I know that there are emails in my Yahoo email inbox.

Does anyone know how to fix this? And yes I have already tried reinstalling Thunderbird.

None of that worked. Anything else to suggest? Or should I just find a new email client?

Try restarting your operating system in safe mode and see if that helps.

It is not an issue with Yahoo. It is Thunderbird that is not responsive. I have Thunderbird setup with Yahoo accounts, Gmail, and Live email accounts. None of them work. They did, now they don't.... they all worked, now none do.

In case 'restarting your operating system in safe mode' wasn't clear enough:

Start *Windows* in safe mode with networking enabled.

- Win7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode.

Does the problem go away?

It seems to work okay in Safe Mode, yes. Then in rebooted and I worked fine in "Normal Mode", once. Then it again stopped working. It seems to work once and then stop!

Then the problem child is not Thunderbird but other software on your computer. Otherwise it would not work in Windows safe mode.

So back to your anti virus, firewall and other security stuff installed by your bank and employer and any of a dozen others, including malware.

Hmmm... I went backwards to Thunderbird 24.2 and things seem to be working better. It seems a though it am able to send and receive mail but when I click the GET MAIL button I do not see the progress bar, so I don't know if it works or not. The only way I know is if I actually receive mail, but I am receiving mail. The security I am running on Windows 7 is Norton Internet Security and Malwarebytes, and I use a VPN. I have tried disabling the VPN and that does not change anything. NIS and MB never generate an alert of any kind regarding Thunderbird. But I have now taken one step further in that direction by adding c:\program files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird folder to the excluded list in both NIS and MB. I will give a week and see how it goes.

You not using add block are you? as it disabled the status bar.

Your Norton Product has a very long history of blocking software updates with it's firewall component. Any setting other than full access will see mail not delivered. Auto the default will see mail stop after every update, regular as clockwork. That is why installing an old and less secure version works.

My personal opinion is the Nortons is the root cause of more strife than it fixes.

The use of a VPN is guaranteed to slow all data traveling over it. Secure yes, slow, yes. So unless you actually need to use a VPN, it is not recommended as it also introduces another whole raft of possible things that can go wrong.

As much as I appreciate the feedback and support, I do not need your personal opinions regarding my selection of security software suites. As much as I would like to reply to your personal opinions I will exercise restraint instead and hold my comments.

Exclude the Thunderbird profile folder from being scanned by your anti-virus real-time scanner.

Not a problem. I am out of here. I know there is no point to continuing this thread.
