I just want to know how I can solve the above problem, which occurs on only one site I want to use... is it a question of pop-ups?

That site may be asking you to use IE, does it work in Internet Explorer?

Thanks Curtis..I'm not clever on computers! "https://formerst.gulfair.com/GFSTMSSSPR/master.aspx" is the website I'm trying to accesss, and it's hopeless on this (admittedly old) computer: using Internet Explorer it 'times out' but with Mozilla at least the site opens up...but then I get this darned message that started the query, when I try and go further by attempting to click on 'Former Staff Travel System' under the arrow, top left side . After your reply, I downloaded IE 8 again, to no avail.

Can you try and see if you an at least get on to the next page, without getting the message? Thanks -at least I'll know more about where the problem lies - Pat

hello Pat, please try this: enter about:config into the firefox address bar (and confirm the notice which shows up), right-click somewhere on the page & create a new preference with

type: string
name: general.useragent.override.gulfair.com
value: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)

restart firefox afterwards in order for the changes to take effect...

  Gulf Air – Staff Travel

*This page is best viewed in Internet Explorer (Resolution 1280 x 1024) version 6.0 or above, and popup window setting should be enabled for this site, please refer to Help page for more details

That is a standard recommendation dating back to 2001 and 2002, before Firefox and Chrome even existed. Basically what it was saying is not to use IE 5.0 or 5.5, but to use IE 6.0 or newer.

The error message appears if you use either of the links on the right side of the home page (Former Staff Travel System, VRS Staff Travel System). These may be coming from the application on the server instead of a local script. Philipp's workaround (which tells the site Firefox is IE6) should get you past the initial browser check, but there's no way to know whether the reservations part will actually work until you try it.

I just learned that the built-in site-specific overrides that worked up until Firefox 24 no longer work on desktop versions starting with Firefox 25. See: 933959 – general.useragent.override.[domain] (about:config entry) stopped working ("won't fix"). Sorry about the nonworking suggestion!

It would be easiest to use IE if that will work for you on the site. If not, you would need an add-on to send a different user agent.

Okay, here's an add-on you can use: ua-site-switch.

When you install it, it adds a yellow hard hat icon to the Add-ons bar. If you don't normally display the Add-ons bar, you can show it temporarily by pressing Ctrl+/ (which also is the keyboard shortcut to close it).

While viewing the site, click the hat and a dialog will come up where you can paste the user agent string you want Firefox to send that site. There's no OK button, you just press Enter after the text.

The text I used was:

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)

Screen shot attached. After that the site did allow me to get to the login screen, but I couldn't actually log in, so I don't know what obstacles you might encounter past the login form.
