I had to fix Windows XP SP3 with the Repair function from Installation disk (renews system files). Now the Shortcut Icons on Desktop or in Folders will not work with Firefox or any other browser.

If i use Open With... Context Menu option it just loads the Shortcut's text into the Browser window.

I can not creat Shortcuts from the URL address of the Browser.

You can try to restore the internet shortcut registry keys by importing this file in the registry editor.

You can first check out if you still have those registry keys and if present export them.

  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.url
  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut

Thanks for you suggestion. Unfortunately it didn't fix the problem

The HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut entry did exist, so I did export it for later.

I have tried every method I can find or think of to detect what causes the error, but am unable to get any clue.

Have also noticed that id I try to make a Web Shortcut i get this error message: The file https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/976667?fps=1#question-reply cannot find.

The faul appears to be how the system associates URLs with EXE files.
