All of a sudden firefox has become unstable - its hanging on the NYTIMEs website. I've done done everything - uninstalled, reinstalled, removed all add-ons, used default themes, reset firefox. Some serious problem here - I had to switch back to IE9. (Version 16.0.1 Firefox running under Windows 7)

Oh by the way, I'm having the same problem on different computers all of which are running the latest firefox under Windows 7

Seems to be stable now, suspect problem was on NY Times end.

Not resolved. The relief was temporary on 10/16/2012. The problem resumed in the afternoon.

CPU consumption jumps to > 12% when FF is hung on my Core i7 machine.

The issue is happening on both of my computers, which have somewhat different configurations. Which IMHO rules out profile corruption.

I suspect when the nytimes.com pages include flash videos (e.g. bandwith-choking water fountain videos), Firefox hangs. But IE works fine.

I too have tried many things, including starting in safe mode with all plugins disabled, disabling hardware acceleration, etc.

Sorry, after I wrote my previous reply, I started having issues again. I'm seeing exactly what you are seeing - multiple computers and 12% utilization on an I7 and IE9 works fine.,

You can check for problems caused by recent Flash updates and try these:

  • disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
  • disable protected mode in Flash 11.3 and later
  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

Hello Mozilla,

The problem is not likely due to Flash, because it happens when you restart the browser in safe mode which disables all of the plugins, including flash. You can also selectively disable flash, restart and see the problem. The problem does not always occur, perhaps because something on the New York Time page is changing.

I think its NY Times content related - which may have exposed a latent bug in Firefox (all plugins were disabled) as Ie9 renders without difficulties. I haven't seen any issues in the past 12 hours.

Yes wavlet, I have also found the IE9 does not have this problem. I've also found that if I just let the frozen Firefox alone, in a couple of minutes or so it becomes "unfrozen", and I can use the New York Times page normally. I can even go away to another site and come back, and it's still working. It's as if some process timed out or something like that.

I also think the issue is a recent addition to the New York Times home pages - an "interactive" feature that displays motion - a train looping by; guys running around a field in football helmets; a water fountain; and most recently, the wind swaying the fabric on a restaurant awning. [Pointless, IMHO.] The lock-ups occur when the pages have one of these elements.

I installed the Element Hiding Helper for Adblock Plus, and blocked this element using two rules (just by pointing and clicking, it's easy): 1) nytimes.com##.videoBG_wrapper 2) nytimes.com##VIDEO[style="position: absolute; z-index: 0; top: 0px; left: 0px; min-width: 100%; min-height: 100%; height: 92px; width: 163px;"]

It's early, but I've not had a lock-up since blocking these little videos.
