Chosen solution

I was using the Ubuntu branded repositories. I've now switched to the mozilla ones after reading gchau's solution. This version is working great.

Thanks for all your help.

Hello gchau,

I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing issues with Mozilla Firefox. Unfortunately, due to a lack of information, I cannot yet troubleshoot your problem. Is the crash occuring every time you launch Firefox? Since when is it happening? You might also want to take a look at the following support article for simple instructions on how to fix most of the problems that cause Firefox to crash:

That should normally and hopefully set you up!

If you however still require assistance regarding this issue, or if you have any more inquiries regarding the matter, feel free to let me know in a reply below. If you found this answer helpful, please mark it as Solution.

Thank you for your valuable time and patience, and all your interest in Mozilla Firefox. Surf safe and have a great day!

I'm having a similar issue. I was on Ubuntu 11.10 when it first happened. I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 and re-installed Firefox to the same effect. The same thing happens when I try to run in safe-mode.

I tried to check the crash reports to see if I could get some idea of what's causing the problem but it looked empty. After the report is submitted it doesn't give me an ID or anything so I'm not sure how to look them up or otherwise find them.

Any help I could get in finding the crash reports, logs or enabling some kind of debugging information would be greatly appreciated.

If you have submitted crash reports then please post the IDs of one or more crash reports (bp-xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx).
You can find the IDs of the submitted crash reports on the about:crashes page.
You can open the about:crashes page via the location bar, like you open a website.

The main problem is I can't open Firefox because it crashes right away so getting to the about:crashes screen is difficult at best.

I tried looking in ~/.mozilla/firefox/Crash Reports/submitted/ and found this:

david@prufrock:~$ ls ~/.mozilla/firefox/Crash\ Reports/submitted/

But they're all empty. Is their sole purpose just to hold the crash IDs or should they have data in them?

You can inspect submitted crash report via the crash-stats.mozilla.com site.

The crash reports that you've submitted only show a crash in the libxul.so file with no data what is causing the crash, so it is not possible to tell anything.
Are you using an official Firefox build from the Mozilla site or an Ubuntu branded version from the repositories?

Thank you for the replies especially cor-el and excuse me for my late reply. The answer to your question cor-el concerning the first crash is that I suppose it was caused by an update from the update manager of Ubuntu but I'm not absolutly sure. After that I tried to solve the problem by using Ubuntu Software Center and apt-get firefox. But the result is always the same. So now, following your advice, I will try to install the version 12.0 of firefox from the Mozilla site. I shall tell you soon if it works.

After reading this :http://palupix.blogspot.fr/2012/04/how-to-install-mozilla-firefox-12-on.html I could finally re-install firefox 12.0 . I am also happy to see again my bookmarks that I was feared I had lost.
