my e-mail works fine but if I try to sign up for any site it always says not valid e-mail

anything using I use firefox and internet explorer both and when I try to sign up for any site such as twitter or anything that requires me to use an e-mail address, my reg. one or hotmail it always kicks it out says not valid e-mail address. I tried to sign up for twitter and as soon as I put the first letter of my address in it came back as not valid
