What general problems will I likely encounter upgrading from 3.0.19 to 5.0.1 - my attempt to upgrade to 4.0 was disastrous?

Using Win XP. When I attempted to upgrade to 4.0 nothing worked so I uninstalled. For security reasons, I know I have to upgrade. What additionally can I do to preserve my settings? I ran a backup - what else.
