Why can't firefox resolve internal DNS but IE is able to?

I am unable to resolve internal DNS namesusing firefox, but external DNS works.

I am able to put in the ip address of the internal address and that seems to work.

Is there something I have to edit in about:config ?

I had a play through there but with no luck.
